As part of the past Reveal event, Blizzard not only unveiled the new expansion for World of Warcraft, but also announced the next section for WoW Classic: Unsurprisingly, it's back to the icy worlds of Northrend. This is the next big thing for World of Warcraft as a whole, as quite a few fans consider Wrath of the Lich King to be the best of all expansions. To be able to experience or experience this again is terrific.

There should actually be players who hate the unveiling of World of Warcraft: Dragonflight including all the information left pretty cold for the ninth expansion - but probably only cold because it will be pretty frosty at WoW Classic this year. The Lich King returns and with it one of the great villains. That will do the franchise counted due to the current Shadowlands expansion good.

Mega-Seller: Wrath of the Lich King

When Wrath of the Lich King was released in November 2008 as only the second expansion after The Burning Crusade for World of Warcraft, the title became a record seller. Within the first day, Blizzard was able to sell around 2,8 million copies – the Lich King expansion was the fastest-selling video game of all time at the time. And the game was not only a financial success, but also in terms of gameplay. The extensive content - new areas, the first hero class, and last but not least the tragic story about Arthas - was well received by the fans.

The expansion was acclaimed by players and critics alike, garnering top marks - and is still considered by many to be the best of any expansion for World of Warcraft. The success of the newly launched Classic version is probably also due to the fact that players have been waiting for Blizzard for a long time not only for the base game, but also for its expansions and thus also for Wrath of the Lich King. And in fact it should be this year: the restart of the second expansion is planned for 2022 - finally.

Even if World of Warcraft was already successful when Wrath of the Lich King was released, the big breakthrough came with the big drama surrounding Arthas, who became the most dangerous boss in the Warcraft universe to date - that players are finally seeing him in the MMO were allowed to beat up was a small sensation. To this day, fans consider Arthas as the Lich King to be the epitome of the ultimate villain - even though the ongoing history of World of Warcraft had repeatedly tried to unleash even more dangerous adversaries on Horde, Alliance and Azeroth. That never really worked out.

With the remake of the classic, those who couldn't play the expansion in the original back in 2008 now have the chance to experience the story in the gameplay setting as it used to be. And everyone who had their best time in World of Warcraft with the “Wrath of the Lich King” can now do it again.

Despite Classic some changes in Wrath of the Lich King

Even if the new edition of the expansion is based on the concept of Wrath of the Lich King at the time, Blizzard will not take over the content from before 1:1. Classic: According to the developers, WotLK is based on patch 3.3.5, at which point there had already been some design adjustments and balancing improvements. Blizzard's trick is clever, because the overpowered phase of the death knight is simply skipped. Blizzard has also made an adjustment to the hero class itself: everyone will be able to create a Death Knight with the release of the Classic expansion – the prerequisite is one

New content will be added gradually. The phases correspond to the course of the "old version". First comes Naxxramas, the Obsidian Sanctum, the Eye of Eternity, and Archavon's Vault. In the second phase then Ulduar, then it goes on in the third phase 3 with Trial of the Crusader. The grand finale then includes Icecrown Citadel and the fight against the Lich King himself.

According to Blizzard, The Burning Crusade should then no longer be an issue in order to prevent the community from being split. The previous division between Classic and Classic: TBC will not exist in a similar way. This could only change if the players actually ask for exactly that.

By the way: Blizzard also largely keeps modern things out of Classic: Wrath of the Lich King. So there will be no dungeon finder because this accelerated process does not correspond to the gaming experience of the past. However, Blizzard is already using other improvements, especially technically. Nevertheless, Blizzard's claim is to accurately reproduce the nostalgic feel of the time. The developers are also thinking about little things in this regard, for example about the hairdresser. There you should not only be able to change the hairstyle, but also make other well-known, but more modern, adjustments. Incidentally, the beta phase should lead to feedback that Blizzard wants to use. Among other things, the developers are targeting the item levels and the associated restrictions.

Ultimately, a lot can be done in the area of "Quality of Life" improvements. However, they want to bring the spirit of that time to the screens as accurately as possible.
