The developers of World of Warcraft really let it rip at Blizzcon: As part of the “Worldsaga”, three expansions will initially come onto the market. The first of these can already be pre-ordered.
The MMO World of Warcraft is groundbreaking for the genre, is considered a prototype of an online role-playing game for various target groups and is now around 20 years old. In its two decades of existence, WoW has often been declared dead. With the “Battle for Azeroth” expansion, the patient was essentially in a coma, but recovered. The developers still couldn't ignite the old fire, something was missing. Since the opening day of Blizzcon 2023 on Friday evening, it's been pretty obvious who that was: Chris Metzen.
Chris Metzen: “It’s going to be epic”
Looking back, World of Warcraft fans were able to be part of a phenomenon that has lasted almost two decades. Many critics predicted the end of the MMO despite all the good content that came into the game with expansions like Mists of Pandaria, Burning Crusade or, most recently, Dragonflight. And now? Nothing will happen to the apocalypse of World of Warcraft. This only takes place in the game itself: the developers announced The War Within, the tenth expansion, at Blizzcon.
But that's not all: This is just the start of the world soul saga, which will then be continued with two further add-ons. Blizzard announced a total of three new expansions at the in-house convention - something that has never been done before. The hype is now correspondingly great.
The developers have also already roughly outlined the content of the new World of Warcraft expansions. With The War Within we go down into the core of Azeroth. From autumn 2024, the focus will be on the Nerubians.
It will then continue with World of Warcraft – Midnight and a journey to Quel'Thalas, where a battle with the forces of the void breaks out. The third expansion is The Last Titan. This should be particularly exciting for fans because it goes back to Nordend. The focus here is on a “conspiracy,” announced Chris Metzen, Executive Creative Director for Warcraft, at Blizzcon.
The star on stage was also the information package about the future of World of Warcraft, but Chris Metzen himself stole the show. He has been back on the Blizzard team for around a year, initially acting as a creative consultant, but now holding the reins in the development of the next add-on. And Metzen was really in the mood - for Blizzard, for Blizzcon, for the fans, for his job, for World of Warcraft. Apparently the fire that hasn't burned quite as hotly in WoW in recent years is blazing in him.
In his fiery lecture, Metzen prepared the fans of World of Warcraft for an “epic” future, not only introducing the World Souls saga, but also belting it out in front of the audience. With a passion that had long been missing from the development team, which almost seemed to be doing a kind of work by the book - albeit at a good level and with excellent results at Dragonflight. Metzen's energy was transferred from the stage to the fans. They roared, they cheered - and apparently they also liked what Chris Metzen had imagined as the future of World of Warcraft.
Blizzard is nailing it: World of Warcraft – The War within can already be pre-ordered, as usual in three editions from basic to epic with different goodies. What fans can expect is also known. Four new zones namely; the new “War Packs” feature, where characters share content across the account, such as transmog or reputation. With the Earthen, a new allied race is entering the game; Hero talents add a twist to the abilities. You will play up to level 80, exploring raids and dungeons as usual and also a new, entertaining adventure feature for one to five players: “Deeps”.
