Stonemaier Games has a new board game project in the pipeline: Vantage. The title is inspired by the adventure role-playing game Zelda: Breath of the Wild, contains a large number of unique cards and relies on the roguelike gameplay known from the video game sector.
Stonemaier Games is one of those publishers that manages to build up a real hype well in advance of a new board game release. The successful game makers behind titles such as Wingspan and Scythe are currently doing just that with Vantage. The board game will contain more than 1.300 cards with unique artwork, 400 of which are printed double-sided, so you can actually play with 1700 different cards. The basic idea: players should be able to enjoy the freedom of the concept of an open world game such as Zelda Breath of the Wild. Will that work? Game fans will find out in 2025 at the latest, when the title comes onto the market.
Vantage: Complete freedom without a campaign
One thing is clear: Vantage is a cooperative game. As a board game with a roguelike progression, fans are constantly competing against the game, trying to get as far as possible - and always starting from the beginning. What sounds like great frustration is - at least in the video game sector - actually a strong motivational factor. With concepts like this, it's important to learn from the mistakes of previous games and simply do better with each new attempt.
The publisher behind successful board games such as Flapping wings, Scythe and libertalia recently published the first details about Vantage. There wasn't much information about the exact gameplay when the project was announced, but the basic data that has been released so far sounds very promising: Jamey Stegmaier himself is designing the board game, in which you will explore around 800 interconnected locations - plus "over 900" more cards that focus on exploration - in total, according to the publisher, there will be over 1.300 unique cards included. Valentina Filic, Sören Meding and Emilien Rotival are responsible for the graphic implementation.
The premise of the board game sounds interesting at least, and is ultimately based on survival games: you crash your spaceship on an alien planet, initially know nothing, then gradually explore the surroundings, are alone but communicate with other players, visit distinctive places and try to prolong your gaming experience as long as possible until you ultimately fail due to the threats. The first title graphic shows a mix of different biomes: barren landscapes, a volcano, bodies of water and meadows - this is what the game principle is ultimately based on.
Vantage is aimed at up to six players, but also has a solo mode. The playing time is stated as 90 minutes. The board game can be set up in two minutes.
Stonemaier Games makes it clear that Vantage will not be a campaign board game. Further details will be released over the coming months. It is also known that Vantage will be a comprehensive and complete game: There will be no expansions.
