The survival video game Valheim by Iron Gate Studio is a real success: the title has now sold ten million copies. The idea of a board game version is also obviously attracting a lot of interest. The associated crowdfunding campaign is going well for Mood Publishing.
At its peak, around half a million fans played Valheim at the same time. The survival game with the mythological fantasy setting has become a real success. The basic idea is as simple as it is familiar: players create a character and then have to survive. Numerous dangers lurk in the procedurally generated world, and adventures and varied biomes beckon. In contrast to many other survival games, PvP battles are only possible with mutual consent.
In Valheim, players write their own story, explore the landscapes, summon powerful bosses. All of this is embedded in a fictional world based on Nordic mythology. The overall concept is extremely well received - the title can hold its own on the market and is particularly convincing in terms of gameplay, because the visuals are idiosyncratic and don't offer much. The best conditions to make a board game based on it.
Valheim board game: Over 5.000 fans join in
When the development of Valheim began as a one-man project in 2018, it was hard to predict which path the game would ultimately take. The development team is now much larger, and the same applies to the game itself. The title became a hit on the Steam platform and has many fans. Thousands of players also like the idea of a board game: Mood Publishing had started a crowdfunding campaign on Gamefound in order to be able to adapt Valheim as a board game and ultimately produce it. And everything indicates that this will happen.
The campaign recently broke the one million euro mark. The board game sticks closely to the original. You start with practically nothing, have to explore the areas and meet enemies.
Up to four fans can take part in a game of the co-op survival board game; there is also a solo mode. The cost of the basic game is moderate at around 65 euros (excluding shipping and taxes). As is typical for a crowdfunding campaign, however, there are different variants - depending on the size of your wallet and budget.
At SPIEL'24 in Essen, the makers of Mood Publishing met board game fans, explained the game and offered test games. The idea was well received in the hall. The makers were smart enough to launch the campaign at the same time as the start of the trade fair. They received the attention they wanted, which is also reflected in the campaign's figures: over 5.400 supporters pumped just over a million euros into the idea. The English version of the Valheim board game is scheduled to be available as a pick-up in June 2025; the campaign is scheduled to be completely completed in October, meaning that every supporter will have received their game. Anyone who supports the German Valheim board game will have to add two months to the production of the game.
