Scrabble, the best-selling and most popular word game that has delighted millions of people around the world for 75 years, celebrates its special anniversary today, World Scrabble Day.
Scrabble, which began in 1948 as a passionate project by American architect Alfred Mosher Butts, has grown into a popular game for young and old, selling over 165 million copies to date. Since its invention, Scrabble has stood the test of time to become one of the most well-known and enduring board games in history. The game's success stems from one fundamental truth: it's not how many words you know that matters, but how you use them.
75 years of discussions about words
The tactical game has continually reinvented itself with exciting innovations and designs, appealing to both long-time fans and newcomers. For more than seven decades, the word game has delighted players around the world with its latest expansions, including the kid-friendly Scrabble Junior, the exciting Scrabble Danger of Traps and the latest innovation Scrabble Vision, which brings augmented reality to the game. Also licenses with pop culture relevant brands such as Harry Potter and Star Wars convince fans worldwide.
Ray Adler, Mattel's vice president and global head of games, said, “We are thrilled to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the groundbreaking strategy word game, Scrabble. After 75 years, Scrabble remains one of the most iconic games in the world for fostering meaningful connections across generations and harnessing the power of words. An ethos brought to life by players through the fun of building words on a shared game board. We hope you too today share in the fun of Scrabble beyond words!”
Scrabble fans around the world are encouraged to post their greatest and proudest Scrabble moments using the hashtag #75yearsofScrabble.
In honor of the anniversary year, the 75th special edition of Scrabble will be available in stores this summer. It's the highest quality Scrabble ever, made from more sustainable materials than any previous version of the classic game. The edition includes a rotating game board and an espresso-stained wooden case, as well as a wooden stand and wooden game pieces. The game will be available from July 2023 in Germany at a recommended retail price of 129,99 euros in stores and in the Mattel online shop. In Germany, too, some highlights await us on the occasion of the Scrabble anniversary, such as an exciting Scrabble Honor Edition.
Scrabble is now available in 30 languages and in 120 countries around the world. In 2006, the latest language, Ukrainian, was introduced, as well as a Braille version of Scrabble for the visually impaired. To mark its milestone anniversary, Scrabble is perfectly positioned to offer another 75 years of fun beyond words.
