Tikal is the name of an ancient Mayan city and, since 1999, the title of the game that was released as the first part of the later "Mask Trilogy" by the author duo W. Kramer and M. Kiesling. It is therefore not surprising that the players immerse themselves in the world of the jungles of Guatemala.
Moving from hex to hex, action points are used to lay out terrain tiles, deploy researchers, collect treasures, explore temples, build camps and discover volcanoes. What sounds simple offers a lot of scope for strategic moves and usually a lot of downtime. Despite this, or perhaps because of this, the games Tikal, Java and Mexica are enjoying worldwide popularity.
Bridge between Nostalgia and Modernity
Tikal has a slightly dusty touch. That's not surprising after 25 years. The Kickstarter "Tikal Legend", which also comes from the pen of the Tikal authors, could now be a real blow for the game box. With the help of the crowd, a game is to be brought onto the market that is based on the mechanisms of the original and at the same time contains new strategic elements and modern game material. A solo mode, popular with many players, is also to be introduced. Four authors are implementing the new option: John Albertson, known for Perseverance and Mosaic, Jeremy Avery, known for his collaborations especially with Dávid Turczi, who has implemented titles such as Nukleum, Rome & Roll and Tawantinsuyu, and the solo and role-playing expert Aleksandar Saranac.
