In 2012, Ticket to Ride (now Ticket to Ride: Classic) saw the digital light of day. Days of Wonder and Twin Sails Interactive created a digital offshoot of the board game released in 2004. Now, almost 11 years later, this digital era is coming to an end, but it is also starting anew. A new publisher, new UI, new design, etc.! Today, November 14.11.2023th, XNUMX, is the official release of the new digital game on Steam.
Currently is Ticket to Ride available for €12,59 (regular price: €13,99). Also the European expansion (which was automatically added to the library for Ticket to Ride Classic owners) is already for €6,99 and that Round the World Ticket available for €33,99.
step by step
step by step, is the German title of the game from the British one game designer Alan R.Moon, it is a very popular board game in which you buy railway lines and connect important cities in the USA. The game, which was released in 2004, received numerous awards, including Game of the Year, Orogins Award, Diana Jones Award (awarded at Gen Con), As d'Or (France), Juego del Año (Spain), Vuoden Peli (Finland) . Just like the board game, which has received numerous expansions and spin-offs over time, including pure country expansions such as Japan, India, Switzerland, or independent games such as Europe, Germany and World Tour. In recent years, a children's version has also appeared "Train after train scary ride“ and city variants, which reduced the game principle to a significantly shorter game length and a smaller game plan. Each of the city branches has its own “traits”. There are taxis in New York, double-decker buses in London, carts in Amsterdam, trams in San Francisco, etc Berlin Trams and subways. Brand new this year is the “Ticket to Ride: Legends of the West", a legacy game with unlockable elements.
The digital offshoot also received numerous expansions, including Europe, France, India, Scandinavia and the UK. The games with a vertical game board were sometimes problematic because the typical computer screen was horizontal. Nevertheless, they were easy to play and each card had its own charm.
All things new?
Marmalade Games promises, among other things, for the new game:
- Vibrant new graphics and 3D embellishments that bring the board game to life.
- Improved AI for a real challenge and a wide range of personality types so you can have the solo experience that suits you best.
- Customize your look and express yourself! Choose from a variety of characters to represent you and choose your preferred color. For the first time, you can customize your trains by choosing a locomotive and car that everyone can see when you claim a route.
- Full cross-play for all platforms
- A post-launch update will introduce Adventures, a meta-narrative with challenges to complete to advance the story and unlock rewards
- Regular updates will add new features and enhancements.
The first version includes the North America and Europe maps, with the Europe map being a DLC. Additional maps are already planned for future updates. There is already an announcement on Steam for an “Around the World Ticket” DLC, which, in addition to the European expansion, will also contain 9 further expansions to come.
The price for Ticket to Ride is now known: on Steam it should be $14.99/£12.79/€14.79, depending on the currency. There may also be differences between the different platforms.
What's next with the game so far?
There is a certain amount of dissatisfaction among Ticket to Ride fans, because a new game means two things in particular. 1. the loss of the well-known and loved game and its design and 2. the cost of the new game.
Marmalade Games stated quite early on that the game must be purchased new and existing purchases cannot be transferred. This is understandable, as it is a new publisher that is investing in the game, but of course also wants to receive profits.
The previous version has not been available for purchase on Steam for some time, but should still be playable as Ticket to Ride: Classic. However, some of the most recent, mostly negative, comments raise doubts. There is talk of content that can no longer be installed through to deactivated multiplayer.
All great Ticket to Ride fans who really liked the previous design, I will definitely give the new version a chance and hope that the new version can convince me so that I can continue to play numerous exciting online games with it can spend game.
