Celebrating films and series is long crossover with video games. Popular games are now often implemented with a well-known cast. B-movie quality or the typical Uwe-Boll charm is rarely seen these days when game titles make the leap to the screen or - thanks to the spread of streaming services - directly to the television. There are now countless video games that are being adapted as films or series. Here is an overview.
Video game adaptations have always been considered second-class films. Even if there are a few pearls and many of them cannot be denied a certain trash charm, they regularly disappoint die-hard fans and flop at the box office. Often this is due to the fact that the producers did not deal with the source material in sufficient detail or that it is not available enough for a film adaptation.
As a result you have movie cucumbers like Super Mario Bros. (1993) which tried to transport a simple jump & run to modern Brooklyn and inflate it with dimensional journeys and dinosaurs. The result was a cinematic catastrophe which had nothing to do with the game. But even commercially successful films such as the Resident Evil series often do not take their originals seriously and usually too often stray from what defines the games. However, a learning process seems to have started in the meantime, so that the quality of video game film conversions has increased in recent years. Therefore, several streaming providers and production studios have announced the implementation of game franchises, which are summarized in the following list, which is as complete as possible.
Netflix grabs several game licenses at the same time
With the series implementation of Castlevania, the streaming giant has apparently tasted blood, in addition to the 4th season of the animation series, 14 new implementations for various game franchises are known. These are very diverse and range from Sonic to Resident Evil to the Division. Live-action films and series as well as animated films and series are planned.
Assasin's Creed - Live Action Series
Despite the only moderate success of the Assassin's Creed film adaptation with Michael Fassbender from 20th Century Fox from 2016, Netflix is planning a live action series based on the franchise of the action-adventure series from Ubisoft. It is not yet known which of the games the plot is based on or whether it is even related to the film. Jason Altmann and Danielle Kreinik are to act as executive producers, a release date is not yet known.
The Division - live action film
The planned implementation of the Ubisoft loot shooter should be based on the story as close as possible to the template. Thus, the film also takes place in a future in which the US city of New York was devastated by the consequences of a deadly virus and sealed off to contain it. The Strategic Homeland Division (The Division for short) is activated and is supposed to ensure law and order in the orphaned streets of New York and find the cause of the deadly virus.
Action expert David Leitch was initially considered for the director's chair, who has already demonstrated his skills with Hobbs & Shaw and Deadpool 2. However, this was replaced in February by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Skyscraper). Jake Gillenhal and Jessica Chastain should star in the lead roles. The Division has been in production since 2020. This had to be interrupted several times due to Corona, so a publication on Netflix should not be expected before 2022.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf - animated film
The main character of the The Witcher film adaptation is to be taken over by Vesemir, who should be known as Gerald's mentor to those who know the video games or books. Few details about the plot are known. All that is certain is that the animated film will show Vesemir's years as a young witch. As with the “The Witcher” series, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is responsible for the implementation. The series is to be created in cooperation with the Korean study MIR (The Legend of Korra). The screenplay is said to have been penned by Beau DeMayo, who also worked on The Witcher Season 1.
Due to the proximity of those involved to the in-house The Witcher series, it can be assumed that the plot of the series is more based on the book and the style is probably more based on the series than on the games. Nevertheless, The Wichter: Nightmare of the Wolf should not be missing from this list, as the animation film should be equally interesting for fans of books, series or games.
Resident Evil - Live Action Series
Not much is known about the Netflix Resident Evil series yet, but the plot is already set. This is only inspired by the game template but has relatively little to do with the plot of the games or the films. The story takes place on several time levels and we accompany the daughters of Albert Wesker through the utopian small town Racoon 2 in 2022 and post-apocalyptic London in 2036. While Jade and Bill Wesker are still fighting side by side in 2022, Jade is in 2036 on his own and tries to get to the bottom of the cause of the end of the world. Albert Wesker will also be at the party, but in contrast to the games he does not appear as a villain, but as a loving father figure, even when there is talk of a dark past.
The script is said to come from the pen of Andrew Dabb, who is best known for his involvement in the mystery series Supernatural. Brownen Hughes, who made a name for itself in particular through her involvement in Breaking Bad and its offshoot Better Call Saul, takes the director's chair. Robert Kulzer will act as producer, who already played this role in the Resident Evil films by Paul WS Anderson and was thus able to show a knack for zombies.
The Wichter: Blood Origin - Live-Action Series
Similar to Nightmare of the Wolf, Blood Origin is more likely to be inspired by the books or The Witcher series, but since this should also be equally interesting for fans of the Witcher Games, it should not go unmentioned at this point. Blood Origins serves as a prequel to the previous series and takes place 1.200 years before Geralt became a witcher. It should shed more light on the origins of his guild and possibly the so-called spherical conjunction will also become part of the plot, which has united the worlds of elves, humans and monsters.

As with the Animatoins film, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is responsible for Blood Origins. A first casting decision has already been made, the actress Jodie Turner-Smith is to take on the role of Eile "The Lark" Lithe: An elite warrior with a divine voice, who leaves her clan and her position as the bodyguard of the kings to become a singer through the to draw land. Details about other characters and the cast are not yet known, but many fans would like Aquaman star Jason Momoa to play the first witcher and Netflix was also rumored to have him in mind. However, he is unlikely to be available for a starring role as Blood Orgin is scheduled to start filming in April and Momoa is already busy shooting a film called Slumberland between February and June.
Cyberpunk Edgerunner - Anime Series
The story of Edgerunner relates to the universe of Cyberpunk 2077. The anime series should tell a new story about previously unknown characters. The focus is on a young protagonist who wants to become Edgerunner, a lawless mercenary who is also known as cyberpunk in the world of anime.
The start of the anime series is planned for 2022. For the first season, 10 episodes are to be produced, whether and how it will continue after that is not yet known. Mainly responsible for the project are Studio Trigger (Little Witch Academia), Hiroyuki Imaishi (Promare, Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann) and Hiromi Wakabayashi (Kill la Kill).
Tomb Raider - anime series
With the series, Netflix continues the plot of the reboot trilogy Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. As announced by Netflix in January on Twitter.

Details of the plot are not yet known and are still a long time coming. Tasha Huo was confirmed as executive producer and writer.
Splinter Cell - animation series
Sam Fisher is back! Even if fans of the video game series have been waiting for a new game in the series since the appearance of Splinter Cell: Blacklist, there is now at least new feed in series form. The Splinter-Cell series has always been about secret agent Sam Fisher who sneaks through various conflicts and war scenarios around the world in order to save them. Which plot the animation series will take up and whether it is based on the plot of individual games or continues the story of Fisher is currently still open.
Action specialist Derek Kolstad (John Wick) has been hired for the Splinter Cell series. Netflix commissioned two seasons with a total of 16 episodes from the start.
Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness - animated series
In addition to the aforementioned live action series about Jade and Bill Wesker, an animation series is also being planned at Netflix. In Infinite Darkness the well-known heroes of the series Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield come into focus, who already denied a common adventure in Resident Evil, at least more or less. The plot of the series should be based on part 4 of the video game series. More details about the history and setting are not yet known at this point in time.

Devil May Cry - anime series
The Devil May Cry series was announced in November 2018, with Adi Shankar, who is already responsible for the Castlevania series in this role, will take on the role of showrunner. Details about the series have not been announced since the announcement and a planned release date has not yet been communicated. Fans of Dante and Co. have to be patient and fall back on the games or the 12 episode Devil May Cry series by the Greenhouse studio from 2007.
The Cuphead Show! - animated series
The classic run and gun shooter from the Canadian development studio StudioMDHR hit the Steam charts shortly after its release in 2017 and was on everyone's lips after a short time. The game was particularly convincing with its own style, which is based on classic cartoons and is therefore also wonderfully suitable for series production. This is what those in charge at Netflix probably thought too and already announced the Cuphead series in 2019, which should appear in 2020, but which has been postponed due to Corona. At the moment it can be assumed that the series will be released this year.
The Cuphead Show! is supposed to take up the adventures of Cuphead and Mugman from the video game template. In the game, the two protagonists enter into a deal with the devil and are of course ripped off by him. Whereupon the two are forced to collect debts for the devil so that he might leave them alone. The first season should include 10 episodes of which parts of the first four episodes were already leaked on the 2020Chan site in June 4. Therefore, it is already known that Cuphead and Mugman will also get into a deal with the devil in the series.
Chad and Jared Moldenhauer of StudioMDHR will serve as Executive Producers along with CJ Kettler of King Features Syndicate.
Twisted Metal - live action series
Twisted Metal is a series of games that was first released for the Playstation in 1995 and has received new parts over and over again until 2015. In recent years, however, the battle-oriented racing series has become quiet, which is mainly known for crazy racing action and the killer clown Sweet Tooth. Therefore, fans of the series will be happy that the creators of the Netflix series Cobra Kai have teamed up with the Deadpool developers to turn the racing madness into a live action series.
Sonic Prime - animated series
Sonic has already received many adaptations, the best known being the animated series Sonic the Hedgehog from 1993, but Sonic also made it to the big screen in February 2020. Now Netflix also wants a piece of the Sonic cake and is planning a series under the title Sonic Prime which is aimed at children, families and long-term fans. Not too much is known about the plot of the series. So far we only know that Sonic must try to save the Multiverse in a race against time.
The Canadian production company WildBrain is responsible for Sonic Prime, which in addition to the production of Teletubies, for cartoon series such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Mega Man: Fully Charged, Fireman Sam and many more. is known. The Sonic series should therefore be aimed primarily at a young target audience.
Dota: Dragon's Blood - animated series
An animation series for the MOBA hit is to be created in cooperation with Valve. A season with eight episodes has currently been confirmed, but it is not yet known how it will continue after that.
The series which takes place in the world and Lore of Dota 2 should revolve around the dragon knight Davion. This has made it his task to destroy all evils in the country. But when he encounters an Eldwurm dragon in battle and encounters Princess Mirana, this sets in motion events that are beyond the warrior's imagination. As for The Witcher animation film, the Dota series is produced by Studio MIR. Dragon's Blood is scheduled to be released worldwide on Netflix on March 25th.

Video game implementation by Amazon Studios
Not only Netflix but also streaming competitor Amazon has recognized the potential of video games and has taken the license for one of the largest RPG series in recent decades. This means that video game fans don't get their money's worth as much as with the competition, should the planned series for Fallout be successful, this could lead to further implementations of game franchises by Amazon Studios.
Fallout - live action series
Not much is known about the series, which is based on the well-known post-apocalyptic role-playing game from Bethesda, but the makers of HBO's Westworld, Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, have been signed on. In the science fiction series, the two have already proven that they have a knack for complex storylines in a rough setting. Ideal conditions for an implementation of the Fallout series which, according to Bethesda, should keep the "hard tone" of the games intact and at the same time allow moments of "ironic humor and B-movie nuclear fantasies" to flow in. Executive Producers are Todd Howards and James Altman of Bethesda. So the signs are good that fans are once again getting quality supplies for their franchise, which has suffered from declining quality and the slight crash landing called Fallout 76 in recent years.
HBO – Successful studio grabs “The Last of Us” license
With The Last of Us, developer studio Naughty Dog launched one of the most successful and popular action adventure games of the past decade in June 2013. In the game, which is set in a survival horror setting, mankind has been transformed into aggressive mutants by being infected with a fungus, whose bodies increasingly crumble as the infection progresses. As one of the last survivors, the adult Texan Joel and the young Ellie fight their way through a post-apocalyptic America on the run from the military and always on the lookout for mutants.
The Last of Us - Live Action Series
The Last of Us was acclaimed by both gamers and critics, selling over 3 million copies in the first 3 weeks of its release. In June 2020 the game got a sequel with The Last of Us 2 which was similarly successful, but could not quite meet the high expectations of fans and critics.
HBO has now taken on the ambitious project of realizing the story of Last of Us in series, in which the studio is teaming up with Jernobyl maker Craig Maizin. This combination, together with the previously known cast, suggest that HBO is doing everything it can to realize The Last of Us in the usual high quality. Two faces known from Game of Thrones were required for the two main roles. Pedro Pascal, who played the role of Prince Oberyn Martell, will play Joel. The young Bella Ramsey, who quickly became a fan favorite as the childlike and clever ruler of the bear island Lyanna Mormont, will play the role of the young Ellie. The series will first tell the story of the first part. A start date has not yet been set.
Realizations for the big screen
A number of video game film adaptations are also planned for the big screen in the next few years, with the studios not only planning new versions but also continuing existing film series or rebooting franchises that have already been filmed.
Tomb Raider 2 - live-action film
After the first adaptations with Angeline Jolie, Tomb Raider received a reboot in 2018. The new film with Alicia Vikander in the role as Lara Croft was based more on the latest parts of the video game series and showed a very young and inexperienced Lara Croft. Despite the good action, the predictable story of the reboot could not convince the fans and thus only generate moderate income at the box office, which is why it initially looked as if all plans for a sequel had been overturned.
Warner ultimately decided to commission a second part, which should have appeared in March 2021, which is no longer possible due to the corona pandemic. In addition, the director Ben Weathly, who was planned for the sequel, jumped out in favor of Meg 2. At the beginning of the year, however, a breath of fresh air came into the project and with Misha Green a new director was found who had previously acted as a show runner for Lovecraft-Country. However, since neither details of the plot nor an exact release date are known, we will have to be patient before we can see Lara Croft on the big screen again.

Sonic 2 - animation film
After the surprise success of the first film with Jim Carry as Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, the franchise is getting a second part, which is scheduled to hit US cinemas on April 08, 2022. Jeff Fowler, who directed the first part, is said to be back. Ben Schwartz, who was the voice behind Sonic, also returns, as do Jim Carrey and James Marsden.
The first part was particularly well received by the fans, even though it had a difficult start. Because the original design of the blue hedgehog couldn't convince and caused a real shit storm on social media. In response, those responsible at Paramount revised the design again, which led to the start date being postponed by three months. The result was impressive and convinced the fans. Despite the delay, Sonic the Hedgehog was released in theaters in February 2020 before the first restrictions from the corona pandemic.
Resident Evil - live action film
In addition to the Netflix series, the franchise is also being revised for the big screen by rights holder Constantin Film, and the reboot is scheduled to appear at the end of the year. The film, previously simply called “Resident Evil”, is currently scheduled to start in US cinemas on September 03rd, and the film should then be released in Germany the following week on September 09th. Due to the still uncertain situation caused by Corona, however, these dates are far from set in stone.
British actress Kaya Scodelario (Maze Runer, Crawl) is set to play Claire Redfield, with Robbie Amell (Upload) playing her brother Chris. The new edition of the film series will thus be based much more closely on the games than the previous film adaptations. In addition to the Redfields, other characters known from the games will appear in the film. Police officer Jill Valentine is played by Hannah John Kamen (Ant Man and the Wasp). "The Umbrella Academy" star Top Hopper will slip into the role of antagonist Alber Wesker, and Leon S. Kennedy, played by Avan Jogia (Son of Shaft), will also appear in the reboot. The new edition, whose story is still under wraps, is being produced by director and screenwriter Johannes Roberts.
Mortal Kombat - live action film
Test your might! The soundtrack of "The Immortals" enjoys cult status, as does the 1995 film adaptation of Paul WS Anderson's video game series. Whether you find the film good is an open question, it definitely has a trashy charm that lets you overlook some clumsy acting performances and the more than shallow story. It remains to be seen whether the new film is convincing and will eventually enjoy a similar status. He will probably not have at least a trash charm, the first moving images are stylistically based too much on the current parts of the game series.

Simon McQuoid is directing the bloody spectacle, which is due to appear in the USA in April. The main roles will be seen as Lewis Tan ("Deadpool 2", "Wu Assassins") as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee ("The Meg") as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson ("Bombshell") as Kano, Tadanobu Asano (" Midway ") as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks (" Supergirl ") as Jackson" Jax "Bridges, Ludi Lin (" Aquaman ") as Liu Kang, Chin Han (" Skyscraper ") as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim (" Star Trek Beyond ") As Bi-Han and Sub-Zero and Hiroyuki Sanada (" Skyscraper ") as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion.
The cast shows that at least the past of the two undead warriors Scorpion and Sub Zero is illuminated, which has already been taken up in some parts of the video game series. This could be an indication that the new edition puts more emphasis on story and character development than the first two films. However, Mortal Kombat has always been known for one thing and that is bloody and brutally staged fights and in this regard the trailer leaves a good first impression.
Uncharted - live action film
The idea for an Uncharted film came up in 2008, but it took a long time before the project really took off. Meanwhile, the project had to cope with the departure of 2020 directors by January 6. Most directors dropped out because they wanted to devote themselves to new projects and didn't have time due to deadlines, so Uncharted has so far lost Shawn Levy (Stranger Things), Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane), Neil Burger ("Destiny"), Seth Gordon (Baywatch). ), David O. Russell (Silver Linings) or most recently Travis Knight (Bumblebee). "Venom" director Ruben Fleischer should finally heave the project over the home straight, even if Corona and the busy schedule of his main actor Tom Holland shouldn't make it easy for him.

After it was unclear for a long time who should take on the role of Nathan Drake, Tom Holland was cast in the role of the adventurer in 2017, who throws himself into his first adventure in the film. The film thus serves as a prequel to the games and shows a younger Nathan Drake than we are used to from the games. For a long time fans had wanted Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly) for the role and the actor was also enthusiastic about the idea. After the choice fell on his young colleague, Fillion took the initiative himself and realized a 2018-minute Uncharted fan film on Youtube in 15 together with director Allan Ungar.
For the big screen, Uncharted should now be realized by February 2022, just hope that there will be no further delays.
Borderlands - live action film
In 2015 the filming of the successful Loot Shooter from Gearbox was announced, meanwhile the project has progressed further and the filming should start as soon as possible in Hungary. Rumor has it that the siren Lilith, known from the Games, will be at the center of the plot to save Tiny Tina, the daughter of the CEO of the powerful Atlas Corporation, from the planet Pandora.
Cate Blanchet will slip into the role of Lilith, comedian Kevin Heart will take on the character of the rather serious Roland and only recently Jack Black was confirmed for the role of the annoying robot Clap Trap. Eli Roth, who has previously directed horror films such as Cabin Fever and Hostel, takes the director's chair. He is now supposed to implement the crazy Borderlands according to a script by Craig Mazin.
