Square Enix has announced a Collector's Edition for the real-time strategy game The DioField Chronicle, which will include a board game based on the video game. The title is expected to be released on September 22 for PC and consoles.
The video game publisher Square Enix has long been poaching in the board game segment: there is a Final Fantasy trading card game, Tom Raider Legends is a tabletop title about the popular archaeologist Lara Croft and Chocobo Party Up! you have arrived at the cuddly Final Fantasy mounts in a board game. Now Square Enix is taking the next step and releasing a board game for a new video game - albeit as a collector's edition goodie.
The Diofield Chronicle: Digital and analogue
The Diofield Chronicle is a new real-time strategy video game launching on September 22nd for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 , Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC appears. Basically it's more of a mix of genres, because the fights are based on active-time elements. In The Diofield Chronicle, players control a group of heroes through tactical battles - there are similarities to Fire Emblem. At the end of the missions, the characters receive experience points and can thus improve as the game progresses.
There is also a story behind The Diofield Chronicle. Everything takes place on a fictional continent affected by war. Players follow the story from the perspective of the Blue Foxes mercenary force. The game was presented for the first time at Sony's "State of Play" show in the spring. Visually, The Diofield Chronicle is sometimes reminiscent of Final Fantasy, which is not surprising: Isamu Kamikokuryo is a designer involved, who had previously worked on character art for the legendary FF series. Square Enix is co-developing the title with Japanese studio Lancarse, which previously worked with Atlus Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey.
And something else is special: Ramin Djawadi and Brandon Campbell composed the music for the game. Both had previously worked on the TV series Game of Thrones, among other things.
As Square Enix has now announced, a Collector's Edition for The DioField Chronicle will be available for around 190 euros, which will contain a board game version of the video game in addition to smaller goodies. The title is "a board game set in the game world of The DioField Chronicle," according to Square Enix. Players make their way to DioField Island as one of the four leaders of the Mercenary Squad and must rack up the most Glory to be victorious. Not much is known about the board game. Attachment of the picture, however, it can be deduced that it is a card-driven game concept in which you can equip your mercenaries in a shop, among other things. At the end of the day, at its core, it's all about advancing the Fame bar - so the game will be competitive for up to four players.
A demo is available for the video game. The title will be released for PC and the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
