While the “ultra-rich” have already made their way to Mars to escape the terrible environmental catastrophe, they are left behind as a lone wolf for the time being and make their journey through the almost endless ruins that remain after Armageddon. Only decades after the catastrophe do the Martians return to take another look at the Earth. The newly released game “The Cub” from Demagog Studio is more than just a platformer and captivates players with an exciting story and apocalyptically good background music.
Platformers don't always come with a gripping story that manages to retain the player in the long term. With The Cub, however, things are completely different. Each level tells its own story and also shows how simple platforming and good storytelling can work together. The game also paints a system-critical picture that couldn't be more in keeping with the current zeitgeist.
Environmental puzzles paired with deadly creatures
In order not to be captured by the Martians, you are constantly on the run and have to escape numerous creatures on your journey. These can be simple wild animals, but the dangerous hybrid plants are also a huge threat and can cause problems for the player. And as if that wasn't enough, even the level design presents you with the next challenge. Each level is structured differently and gives puzzle fans room to puzzle. After all, you want to make your way through the post-apocalyptic realms yourself without having the solution handed to you on a silver platter.
All hand drawn
According to the developers, everything in The Cub is purely handcrafted and is mainly based on the classic film style of the 90s. The well-known series “Primal” is also said to have given Demagog Studio additional inspiration for the game. In AI-dominated times, where every perfectly generated image is just a mouse click away, something like this deserves the highest recognition.
