HCM Kinzel had some new products at SPIEL23. In addition to the successful successor to Next Station: London, Next Station: Tokyo, there was also a new party game called Tension. Now let’s find out what that can do!
1 question – 10 answers
Name 10 types of pasta within 60 seconds. Well, how many can you think of and were the 10 you were looking for there? Yes, that was basically the entire explanation. Well, not exactly, but the rules are really straightforward, which is always a good thing for a party game, because you want to play it quickly and not have to spend ages learning the rules.
You play in two teams who have to guess alternately. One person from the team that is not currently guessing gets the scorekeeper and draws a card. On this card there is one question and 10 answers. The guessing team must now try to guess as many terms as possible within 60 seconds. Each term you guess gives you 1 point and lets you move forward on the score track after guessing.
There are two types of questions, simpler ones and slightly more difficult ones. Which card you use is determined by the field you are standing on. Some fields even give you double points or require you to announce the number of correct answers in advance. If you can't do that, you have to move your figure back.
Have fun and some frustration
The game is very entertaining for the target group! Who doesn't like to shine with knowledge and be able to give the decisive answers? It can be a bit frustrating when questions come up that you don't know much about (name types of dinosaurs) while the other team has to list things they find in the fridge - both questions are in the easier category in the game find. If you're not a dinosaur fan, you might think of two or three potential dinosaurs - whether they're on the list is another question. The balancing of the questions was not quite as optimal. But something like that is often part of knowledge or quiz games - it is often very difficult to take people's different levels of knowledge into account.
Another problem with such quiz games is the topicality of the questions. There are probably already generations who can't do anything with Alice in Wonderland, the Jungle Book or Queen's songs; sought-after social media platforms could be deactivated or no longer trendy in the future. This is also a common problem with quiz games and also applies here. Luckily this only affects some of the cards, but if a team doesn't know the Jungle Book, it quickly becomes a very boring round.
As we played, we agreed that we could say no to a few questions and then play with the next card. This way you can easily circumvent the problem and also get the balancing under control. In my opinion, the focus should be on fun, especially with party games!
Overall, tension is a really fun pastime!
