Fans are waiting for the announcement of a Steam Deck 2, but Valve has now surprisingly let another cat out of the bag: A new Steam Deck as a limited edition will be launched in November.
Oops, that came as a surprise: Valve has announced a new Steam Deck. There is a small catch, however. It is not a genuine successor, but a variant of the already available OLED model. The only obvious difference is the color. So if you haven't been able to get on with the inconspicuous black Steam Deck so far, you'll now be presented with a device with a much more eye-catching look.
New Limited Edition as a second experiment
Even though the announcement came as a surprise, it is actually not a real surprise. Last year, Valve had already tested whether such ideas would be well received in the scene with a transparent Steam Deck. And apparently they are, as the release of the white Steam Deck shows.
"This is our second experiment in this direction," the company explained. And it sounds like it won't be the last. They want to use the feedback to "make future decisions about possible new color variants." As Valve further explains, the white Steam Deck should be available in all regions where the normal devices are delivered.
By the way, where it says Limited Edition, there is also a shortage: if it's gone, it's gone. Valve has made this clear about the new white Steam Deck. Gene will only be an OLED version with a storage capacity of one terabyte. The price for fans in Germany is 719 euros. The device will be available to buy from November 19th at midnight.
There are no technical differences. The white Steam Deck is no more powerful than the standard OLED model. For Valve, however, the device is a good opportunity to convince even more fans of the idea of mobile PC gaming. The way gaming enthusiasts play has changed significantly in recent years, especially due to the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck and its competitors - have changed significantly. Top-class titles can be played on Valve's handheld, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Marvel's Spider-Man or The Last of Us. Valve is now building on this success. Although it is clear that a Steam Deck 2 will be released at some point in the future, the developers have not yet revealed when exactly this might happen. According to Valve, they are waiting for a real leap in technology. Only then will a real successor be released. Until then, a few more color variants of the current Steam Deck are likely to come onto the market.
By the way, anyone who wants to buy the white Steam Deck must have a user account on the platform that was created before November 2024 - and you must also have a good reputation there. It is still unclear how many limited edition devices will be launched.
