There have been rumors of a new Nintendo Switch with better performance data in the past. The optimized console version, sometimes called Nintendo Switch Pro, is supposed to enable gaming in a higher resolution, among other things. Nintendo has officially confirmed neither a possible release of an improved Switch nor the project itself. Now insiders are spreading rumors again and a new name: Super Nintendo Switch.
Two insiders have spread a new rumor about a more powerful Nintendo Switch via ResetEra. We already know that and nothing has been officially confirmed. But: The naming makes you sit up and take notice, because it basically fits perfectly with what one would expect from Nintendo from a further development.
"Super Nintendo Switch" somewhere at PS4 level
The name “Great Nintendo Switch“, which the insiders state, sounds appropriate. It is said to be a more powerful variant of the original console, which is in the same hardware range as the Playstation 4, with DLSS and a better CPU. This could also be attributed to Nintendo: the Japanese console manufacturer strives for concepts with its consoles, not pure performance data. One would have expected that a Super Nintendo Switch would not be at the same level of performance as a Playstation 5 or Xbox Series X|S if Nintendo were to unexpectedly announce such a project.
Nevertheless: The Super Nintendo Switch would be somewhere in the generation after the Playstation 4 and would therefore offer significantly more power than the current one Nintendo Switch or even the Switch Lite. Nintendo would thus be taking a path that is much more than just a reworking of a previously extremely successful console. The possible jump would be more like that between the Wii and the Wii U than that from the Switch to the Switch Lite. Ultimately, the insiders don't reveal much about the new Nintendo Switch: Yes, it should enable 4K resolutions, at least when the console is docked.
What the insiders say about a possible release window is exciting: The improved Nintendo Switch is scheduled to appear in 2022, and the console may be rolled out parallel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. In principle this could be true, but there are also facts that speak against it. At least on the Super Nintendo Switch Breath of the Wild 2 will not be upright, the game has been in development for a long time and visually seems to correspond to the level of its predecessor. So there's no need to build a console release around this triple-A title. Due to the continued excellent sales figures, it is also unclear whether the original console has already reached the end of its life cycle. In purely economic terms, Nintendo would get more out of it if they first exploited the Switch's potential. On the other hand, games like the new Monster Huter Rising already indicate the limits of technical performance - so an improved Switch would be the right step towards the future.
Nothing has been officially confirmed so far. One will have to wait and see if and when Nintendo will comment on the subject.
