The moses Publishers always have some exciting dice games in their range. What is often striking is the box that can be opened. But this time we are talking about a dice game with a normal box, but with some potential for trouble.
Who collects… er, rolls the best sweets?
Zuckerkube comes with an exciting and interactive game mechanic. I would describe it as King of the Hill or Streit-Kniffel. There are task cards on which you have to collect dice with the number 1, a pair or four different dice, for example. However, I only complete the tasks if my dice are still on the card when it is my turn again.
At the beginning of each turn, the person checks whether their dice are on task cards. If so, they take these cards and place them in front of them. These cards give points at the end of the game.
The person also takes the dice back; they are now available to him again.
The person then rolls the dice up to three times and can place dice on their own "card" after each roll. After the third roll at the latest, the person places these dice on the task cards. They can then do so if there are no other dice on these cards and they fulfill the condition of the task. If the card requires ones, then they can lay out three ones, for example. If the card requires a three of a kind, but the person only has two fives, then they cannot put these on the card.
If there are already dice from other people on the card, then that person must be outbid. For example, more required dice must be placed than are currently on the card. For tasks that require a special distribution of the dice, for example four different dice, then you have to reach a higher total. So if there are 1-4-5-2 (total 12) on the card, I can put my 2-3-3-5 (total 13) on the card. The other person's dice then go straight back to them.
In the event that you cannot complete a task or if you cannot place all the dice (this happens especially when the others have already placed dice quite well), you can also place dice on the joker card. The number of dice does not matter here, the person with the most dice always wins.
Trouble guaranteed, but fun trouble
The game is played as you would expect from the King of the Hill mechanism. You push each other's dice off the card and hope to stay on the cards for as long as possible. It can go back and forth quite a bit and you always have to consider how many dice you want to use for the cards, because the longer you duel for the card, the longer the dice are unavailable.
But with sugar cubes, the fun is clearly more important than the frustration. Of course it's annoying when I get pushed by a strong card, but then I can try to take other cards in the next round or even fight back. Because the person always has to stay on the card for a round, the person who will win the card can change several times. So it's an exciting bidding war!
The task cards offer a colorful variety and are also well illustrated with different sweets. Just like you would imagine a colorful bag of sweets. The dice are also brightly colored in neon colors to match the theme.
In conclusion, it can be said that sugar cubes focus on familiar cube tasks, combining them with an entertaining King of the Hill mechanism and has created a fun game. Ideal for those who like simple dice games and love stealing points from others.
