The games developer and publisher Stratosphere Games announces that it has closed another round of financing with three partner companies and has also secured funding from the federal government. The funds will go towards the development of the co-op looter shooter Desolation. In the future, the company wants to focus on the development of cross-platform titles.
Led by CEO and Founder Kristian Metzger and COO Daniel Ullrich, cross-platform developer and online games publisher Stratosphere Games announces the closing of a new investment round with Riot Games, 1Up Ventures and Skycatcher. In addition, the Berliners have successfully received further funding within the framework of the federal computer game funding.
"Desolation": Shooter in post-apocalyptic sci-fi world
The total of more than three million euros will flow into the next step of the internal roadmap: the development of a coop looter shooter called "Desolation". In the cross-platform game, players fight their way through a post-apocalyptic sci-fi world. A separate shooter mechanism should optimize the interaction between the individual platforms.
“We share the approach of developing games for and together with players. Riot Games, like Stratosphere, believes in the power and strength of communities,” said Jake Perlman-Garr of Riot Games Investment. "Stratosphere is the perfect match for our unique portfolio of studios that move and advance the gaming world," said Ed Fries, General Partner at 1 Up Ventures.
“In 2020, we led Stratosphere's first round of funding and were impressed by the team's significant growth through the creation of a unique culture and a robust lineup of innovative games. We look forward to investing again in the company in the next phase and beyond,” adds Sia Kamalie, Founder of Skycatcher.
With its new title, the company aims to develop a comprehensive cross-platform IP to become a leading developer and publisher of live games and worlds. As a first step, Stratosphere has increased the size of its workforce to 67 people and now employs people from over 22 countries. Up to 2023 employees are planned by the end of 100.
“As we continue to work on and develop our current products, we will slowly shift our focus to creating our own cross-platform IPs. Our goal with the new title is to push the boundaries of what is currently possible in terms of devices and media forms,” says Stratosphere CEO Kristian Metzger.
In the fall of 2022, the long-awaited start of this transformation will begin with the launch of home world mobile and the Early Access of Dawn of Ages. The former title is published by Gearbox Interactive with the support of Stratosphere, while the latter is entirely self-published.
