Paradox Interactive has released the new Lem update for Stellaris: The free expansion adds new content to both the original game and several of its expansions. The base game Stellaris will also be free to play throughout the weekend.

“Our inspiration comes from many different sources, be it the work of science fiction writers around the world or our own ideas from the past. Top marks for economic strategy

Named after the well-known Polish sci-fi author Stanisław Lem, the Lem update is the first release by the newly established Custodians team within the Paradox Development Studio. The Custodians team focuses on developing free content, balance and updates for Stellaris and improves both the base game and the previously released downloadable content. The Lem update adds Stellaris added new content and gameplay features including:

  • Custom tradition trees where players can choose which trees to chase.
  • For the Plantoids Species Pack, there are two new state elements and three new species properties:
    • The state element "Idyllic Blossom" (restricted to plantoid or fungoid species) enables the construction of Gaia Seeder buildings.
    • The state element "catalytic process", which is available for species with and without swarm consciousness, exchanges metallurgists for catalyst technicians. These technicians turn energy credits into alloys. Also works with machines and lithoids.
  • Players who own the Humanoids Species Pack will have the option to raise a powerful clone army, create an empire of master craftsmen, or lead an empire fueled by the sheer decadence of pleasure addicts.
  • The state element "Revived Armies" was renamed "Reanimators". Exclusive to Necroid players, the afterlife is now available with more dynamic options for reviving targets, including the ability to revive Leviathans and enemy troops during battle.
  • Both in the Nemesis- as well as in apocalypse-DLC new tradition trees have been added, as well as a new trading tradition in the base game. In addition, players can now choose seven out of up to eleven tradition trees (with all DLCs).
    • owner of Nemesis gain access to the traditional Subterfuge tree, which grants bonuses if they succeed in spying or their enemies fail.
    • owner of Apocalypse gain access to the Tree of Relentless Tradition, which greatly enhances the capabilities of their Defense Starbases.
  • Major updates to the game balance, including reorganizations of Ascension Perks, Civilizations, Ethics, and Ancestry.
  • Numerous bug fixes and various AI improvements to improve the overall quality of Stellaris.

To celebrate this release, Paradox has partnered with the Polish Science Fiction Foundation to mark Stanisław Lem's 100th birthday with in-game content directly inspired by the author's work. The new trailer for today's update can be seen here:
