Starfield goes into early access tonight - it is Bethesda's first new brand in around a quarter of a century. The expectations are high, but apparently they are being fulfilled. The first Metacritic reviews are extremely positive.
The first Starfield test reports have now been published, which in turn means that the first Metacritic average rating can now be read. And Bethesda's new space role-playing game seems to deliver on what it previously promised.
Solid start for Starfield
Starfield will not officially be released until September 6th for PC, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series
For Xbox fans, Starfield is probably the biggest Xbox innovation since Halo Infinite. And anyway, Bethesda's video game is one of the biggest new releases in recent years. And the game is obviously well received, as the average rating on Metacritic is currently 89 for the PC version and 87 for the Xbox Series X version.
Further tests will arrive gradually and influence the ranking. It is difficult to predict which direction this will take. Some reputable portals such as IGN Spain, the Washington Post, Screenrant or Windows Central have already published their test reports including scores: these are between 90 and 100 points - out of a maximum of 100. Other test portals have given ratings in the 80s, a few are underneath.

At least it's a solid start for Bethesda and the game idea and gameplay seem to be convincing. Nevertheless: In the history of Bethesda games, Starfield is currently at the lower end of the rating scale. For comparison: The Elder Scrolls V – Skyrim received a 96 on Metacritic, making it one of the highest rated games ever. Fallout 4 has a rating of 88 on Xbox One.
However, the comparison may be flawed today. Because the games with a lower rating do not necessarily have to be worse. Nowadays, test reports are much more critical, which is good overall. Top ratings at the upper end of the scale are no longer distributed too freely.
By the way, if you want to play Starfield earlier but don't want to pay the full price, you can do so as Xbox fans using the combination of the Game Pass and the Premium Edition Upgrade: that costs around 35 euros, half as much as the full-price game. In addition to early access, there is also the first story expansion, the Constellation Skin Pack and some digital extras.
