With the start of the second set, "Shadows of the Galaxy," pretty much everything at Star Wars Unlimited remains the same as before: fans play, take part in tournaments, collect cards, discuss scarce stocks. Fantasy Flight Games is not attracting people unfamiliar with the scene with this - but that could change with the third set.
New releases of trading card games are usually associated with ups and downs: At the start, there is a noticeable hype, then the cards quickly become scarce – after that, the trading card games trickle along until they attract attention again with waves of cards ready for the market. The latter decreases with each subsequent set, unless publishers take countermeasures. Wizards of the Coast reinvents itself with Magic the Gathering not new, but brings a breath of fresh air to the franchise with license crossovers, for example, Disney Lorcan Ravensburger has gradually improved significantly, especially in terms of Organized Play and accessories, and with Star Wars Unlimited it is still primarily the playful variety that should keep fans happy.
Third Set: The Jedi Are Coming
As trading card games get older, they often have a hard time attracting new players to the genre. With each wave of cards, each new mechanic, each adjustment, trading card games become more complex and therefore less beginner-friendly. Trading card games usually develop mechanically, which is good for die-hard fans, but increases the hurdles for beginners. The effect: as the number of cards increases, it becomes more difficult to make a trading card game accessible to the masses. Publishers usually counteract this by using popular themes.
This is now also becoming apparent with Star Wars Unlimited. Fantasy Flight Games had announced the title of the third set early on: “Twilight of the Republic”. And it was also relatively clear early on what to expect. However, it was only with the release of the first cards and illustrations that it became clear how much the third set of Star Wars Unlimited will be built around the lightsaber wielders.

Star Wars: Unlimited TCG Shadow of the Galaxy Booster Display (24...* | 99,79 EUR |
Although the Force and some famous Jedi and Sith have existed since the start of Star Wars Unlimited; the card duels felt pretty "blaster-heavy". Laser salvos and loud bangs are familiar to film fans who don't know much about Star Wars, but it is the lightsabers that give the franchise its recognition value. The makers of Star Wars Unlimited are now taking advantage of this and could finally attract those beginners who weren't reached with the second set with the third set. Overall, it worked well and provided new tactical options, but overall it offered very few really strong leaders and limited the variety of the trading card game somewhat.
Thematic U-turn
“Twilight of the Republic” could be a turnaround. Instead of shooting at each other with droids and tanks, the third set promises buzzing battles between various lightsaber wielders, all of whom will then be able to use the Force. This is not only visually new, but could also be a real gain in gameplay for the still young trading card game, which Fantasy Flight Games will ultimately continue to run for many years to come would like to.
The first cards and illustrations show Jedi and Sith, including iconic characters such as Count Dooku, Kylo Ren and Asajj Ventress. This time, it could be the younger generations of Star Wars fans who will be able to relate to the content. The first two sets focused relatively heavily on classic characters from George Lucas' sci-fantasy epic, even though "Shadows of the Galaxy" took a first step towards current topics.
With the third set, Fantasy Flight Games is now killing two birds with one stone: it is offering active players new cards and new possibilities, but at the same time it is addressing a new target group that might dare to get into the trading card game primarily because of the Jedi-Sith theme. In essence, "Twilight of the Republic" is not aimed at those fans who are wondering whether Han shot first (he did!), but rather at those who are wondering how the hell Darth Maul was able to return to the franchise after being split in two.
There is no doubt that manufacturer Gamegenic will once again bring out visually appealing accessories to enhance the table presence of Star Wars Unlimited support.
Will the new cards be available for purchase at SPIEL'24 in Essen? It's still unclear. Fantasy Flight Games would like to provide further information on this and says that they are currently finalizing all the details for the trade fair in October.
