Fantasy Flight Games has announced plans to release a new Star Wars deck building card game in the coming year. What exactly this is about is unclear. However, Caleb Grace, one of the leading creative minds behind the hit titles Marvel Champions: The Card Game and The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, is involved. That gives hope for quality.

There can never be enough Star Wars board games. Especially not when Fantasy Flight Games is responsible for it. Most of the time, quality comes across in the games from the US publisher. As FFG has now announced, a new Star Wars deck building card game will be released in 2023.

Star Wars: New deck builder gets competitive

Not much is known about the new Star Wars card game. It will be a deck building game created by Caleb Grace, one of the lead designers of similar card game titles like Marvel Champions: The Card Game and The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. At least that leaves that Schlud that similar quality can be expected from the new Star Wars game. It would be desirable, because both the Marvel offshoot and the version based on Tolkien's fantasy stories are convincing as solo games and also cooperatively.

It is precisely at this point that Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game will apparently do a few things differently: it is supposed to be a competitive card game. The first teaser image already suggests this with the duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.

A new Star Wars game had been missing among the new announcements from Fantasy Flight Games - but industry insiders were almost certain that the publisher would announce another title based on the powerful license. Ultimately, that's not surprising: after all, FFG is confirmed to be launching Star Wars titles or expansions for Star Wars games. Fantasy Flight Games is a leader in this area.

For the time being, however, it remains unclear which concept the makers of Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game will rely on. In contrast to the cooperative Living Cards Games from Marvel, The Lord of the Rings or Arkham Horror, it will most likely be a PvP card game.

Finally, a remake of Star Wars: The Card Game - a competitive two-player LCG released in 2012 - would also be conceivable. FFG recently proceeded in a similar way with the new edition of the Lord of the Rings title. Fantasy Flight Games had recently become much more involved in the market in the card game segment and established bestsellers - this is expected to continue with the new Star Wars title in 2023.
