The international game days in Essen will take place from October 24th to 27th. More than 1.500 new products are then waiting to be tried out by players from all over the world. When 1.200 exhibitors present their products, it is difficult to keep track of things. Just play everything? Impossible! Visitors to SPIEL'19 have to make a preselection in order to be able to play their favorite titles. We worked our way through countless lists in order to filter out the editorial highlights of SPIEL'19.

When the 24th International Game Days begin on October 37th, fans from all over the world will be able to try out over 1.500 new ideas from around 1.200 exhibitors. The program: As always, a colorful mix. From children's games and family-friendly offers to expert or niche games, everything that might be of marginal interest to board games is represented at SPIEL'19. The offer is more international than seldom before. Exhibitors from 53 nations will travel to the games capital Essen in October.

SPIEL'19: The board game recommendations from our editors

Because our game editors not only write about board games, but also play them themselves, each of them has personal highlights at SPIEL'19.

The list of highlights for SPIEL'19 will be expanded regularly until the start of the international game days.

  • Alubari: A Nice Cup of Tea by Tony Boydell
Thematic, complex and in-depth economics, tea trade and railroad game.

  • Cities Skylines from Kosmos
Cooperative city building game with video game template for 1 to 4 players.

  • City of the Big Shoulders by Raymond Chandler III
Buses, boats, roads: complex, interactive strategy game

  • Dreamscape by Sylex
Expandable title for 1 to 4 players with a great look. It's about good dreams and good sleep.

  • Era: Medieval Age from eggertspiele / Pegasus
Matt Leacock takes 1 to 4 players back to the Middle Ages. Dice game that is based on the concept of "Through the Ages". Supposedly great material: over 100 3D buildings can be placed in the course of the game.

  • Era of Tribes by Arne Lorenz
Mechanics mix for 1 to 4 players: civilization, worker placement, strategy game. 1 to 4 players

  • Entity by Redimp Games
Semi-cooperative title for 1 to 4 players with an interesting setting during the Vietnam War. Can also be played in solo mode.
During the Vietnam War, an unknown life form (played by a player) breaks out of a secret research laboratory. The other players are special forces who hunt the alien. Marco writes: "Sounds like a drilled-out version of Specter Ops".

  • hard city by Hexi Games
Squeaky colorful with clichés: 80s cop action with beautiful miniatures.

  • Human Punishment: The Beginning by Godot Games
Stand-alone prequel to Human Punishment. Semi-cooperative social deduction for 3 to 6 players.

  • Infinity Defiance by Corvus Belli
Cooperative dungeon crawler in the Infinity Universe. Aimed at 1 to 4 players.

  • On March by Eagly-Gryphon Games
Mars colonization remains a hot topic. German version for 1 to 4 players should be available.

  • Perseverance: Castaway Chronicles by Mindclash Games
Worker placement with dice drafting. Euro game with dinosaurs for 2 to 4 participants.

  • Rallyman: GT by Holy Grail
Roll and move with racing cars by Jean-Christophe Bouvier and with illustrations by Loic Muzy.

  • So, you've been eating by Scott Almes
Interesting setting and “spectator mode”. Playable for 0 (AI's against each other) to two players.

  • Two Khans by Dorehami Games
An Iranian publisher brings team-based social deduction for 6 to 15 players. The title suggests: The opposing Khan must be found and eliminated.

  • Undaunted Normandy by Osprey Games
"Wargame light" with deck building mechanics. For 1 to 2 players with a weakness for tactical war skirmishes.

Because many visitors use their smartphone or tablet as a navigator, but do not have network reception everywhere: If you prefer to read the list offline and take it to the trade fair, you can alternatively download the PDF file> here <download.
