Innovations enliven every market, and the board game world is no exception. New ideas advance the diversity of games and allow new ideas to emerge - they are the engine of creativity. A game that particularly stands for this creative approach to ideas and possibilities is Spaceship Unity by Pegasus Spiele. That's why Merz Verlag and the jury of experts from the gaming world awarded the game the InnoSPIEL 2023.
In Spaceship Unity we are recruits on a spaceship. And the spaceship is our home. Actually, our home becomes a spaceship: In Spaceship Unity, normal everyday objects become spaceship systems. Umbrella, vacuum cleaner, wool socks, gloves, extractor hoods - everything helps to conquer time and space. The game is structured like a television series, and it lovingly plays with our memories of evenings spent watching series in front of the screen.
If you agree to this, the game can also be played across generations. The intro case, which easily accompanies the game, also helps here. Thanks to its multiple twists and turns that allow you to experience new stories, the game is always fresh and the particularly high level of interaction makes it an experience for everyone in the spaceship. Spaceship Unity has everything that characterizes an InnoSPIEL.
Jury: “There has never been a game like this before”
“There has never been a game like this before,” the jury explained the decision. The entire apartment, the entire house becomes a play area, no object is left unused to be used in this silly fun.
“The nonsense that the game demands of us unleashes enormous creativity and brings our own world of experience to the gaming table. Spaceship Unity can be played at any intensity and leaves no one unaffected: it is a storytelling game, an action game, a movement game, a role-playing game, a sentimental journey into the past of your own science fiction viewing experiences. The topic is beautifully set and encourages you to try it out.”
Also nominated for the award
Mysterium Kids – Captain Boo’s treasure
Someone from our group takes on the role of captain and gives acoustic clues with the enclosed tambourine: The aim is to imitate the sound of an object shown on a map. If the round guesses correctly, they get closer and closer to Captain Boo's treasure.
Mysterium Kids, by Antonin Boccara and Yves Hirschfeld, publisher Libellud/Space Cow, 2-6 players, ages 8 and up, 21 minutes, approx. 38 euros
QE – Quantitative Easing
The aim is to save companies by having the state buy them. Money? Does not matter. At least there is an infinite amount of it, because each of the banks at the table can offer as much as they like. Ten euros? Clear. Ten thousand? Surely ten million? Why not? At the end of the game, each of the purchased companies is worth victory points. Or nothing at all: Because the nation whose central bank spent the most money is eliminated and is bankrupt.
QE – Quantitative Easing, by Gavin Birnbaum, Strohmann Games publisher, 3-5 players, ages 10 and up, 30 minutes, approx. 32 euros.
