The intergalactic action game Spaceship Unity – Season 1.1 from Pegasus Spiele is the innoSPIEL 2023. The jury of the Innovation Prize announced the award for the cooperative family game by the author duo Jens Merkl and Ulrich Blum on Tuesday afternoon. A second part of the board game will be released this year at SPIEL'23.
The innoSPIEL will be awarded for the seventh time as part of the International SPIEL Match Days. In 2017, the prize was launched by Merz Verlag, the organizer of SPIEL, together with the city of Essen. Since then, games with a particularly innovative and creative game concept have been honored. Pegasus Spiele can look forward to the innoSPIEL for the third time this year: After Magic Maze in 2017 and Ghost Adventure in 2021, Spaceship Unity - Season 1.1 was able to convince the jury of seven game experts this year.
Second part: Spaceship Unity – Season 1.2
The cooperative action game, which was released at SPIEL 2022, takes two to four players aged ten and over on an adventurous journey as recruits of the Interplanetary Alliance. In the five consecutive episodes of Season 1.1, the goal of the playgroup is to secure galactic peace. The game requires full physical effort because the entire apartment becomes a spaceship and everyday objects such as umbrellas, vacuum cleaners, etc. become spaceship modules.
Another important aspect of the game is the epic sci-fi story that the players experience together. There is no winning or losing in the classic sense; instead, the story goes on and on. However, the results of a game round have far-reaching consequences for the next chapters and determine where the game continues. Because no materials are destroyed while playing and the campaign changes with each outcome, players can relive the story over and over again.
The innoSPIEL jury said about Spaceship Unity: “There has never been a game like this before: the entire apartment, the entire house becomes a play area, no object is left unused to be used in this silly fun. The nonsense that the game demands of us unleashes enormous creativity and brings our own world of experience to the gaming table. Spaceship Unity – Season 23, the second part of the action game, will be released at SPIEL'1.2, which follows directly on from the story in part 1.1. The peace mission failed. The factions are at war. The nano-bots are spreading rapidly and all hopes for peace rest on the players. In six new episodes, the players experience the finale of their adventure.
The gameplay of Spaceship Unity remains the same in the expansion, but new challenges await, such as combat chapters. Like the action chapters, these are played for a timed period, but the crew now has to decide for themselves when to use which weapon systems. But the opposing spaceships also have weapons and don't hesitate to use them.
