The popular video game series Sonic the Hedgehog continues as a board game. With Sonic Roll, Kess Entertainment and Sega are bringing a board game about the blue hedgehog and his friends onto the market. The title is scheduled to be published next year.
In 1991, Sega celebrated the birth of the hedgehog invented by Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima and Hirokazu Yasuhara, who raced through roller coaster-like levels, collected rings and ultimately beat up the evil scientist Doctor Eggman. The video game series has been enormously successful over the past few decades and, in particular, had an enormous influence on the console industry in the XNUMXs. The Sonic series is one of the best-selling franchises ever.
Sonic Roll: Board game with a blue hedgehog
Next year, fans can experience a different kind of Sonic adventure. Kess Entertainment announced Sonic Roll on social media. The board game, developed in collaboration with Sega, will be delivered in January. The publisher and distributor had previously attracted attention through other adaptations of video games as board games, including Street Fighter V, Contra and Mega Man.
There isn't a lot of information about the Sonic board game yet, but a picture of the material suggests that fans will be offered a lot of the elements that made the 2D side-scroller so famous. Players make their way through various well-known level environments from the template and collect coins and other goodies.
Various characters will obviously be playable in the board game for up to four people (solo mode available). Each character will use their own color-matched set of dice to trigger actions in the levels. The screenshot shows a small asymmetrical process; the different characters - including Sonic himself, of course - have different abilities. Sonic, Knuckles, Amy and Rose are apparently playable.
As with Mega Man Adventures (here, however, in combination with cards), dice play a central role in this board game - the title “Sonic Roll” already indicates this linguistically and symbolically.
What is particularly interesting for fans is the design. The illustration of the box is based on the well-known graphics, so it exudes a touch of nostalgia. The game material itself is also visually based on the classics from the nineties: pixelated, colorful, recognizable. Illustrator Tracy Yardley, known for drawings of the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, designed the cover.
