Good news for all series fans: The first season of the twice award-winning series "Das Boot", produced by Sky, Bavaria Fiction and Sonar Entertainment, will be broadcast on the public TV channel ZDF from autumn/winter 2019.
Like Lethal Weapon, only in French
In winter 2018, the Sky Original Production "Das Boot" delighted an audience of millions and was honored with the TV National prize at the GQ Men of the Year Awards even before it was broadcast. Just a few days ago, the event series won two awards at the German Television Awards: Vicky Krieps was honored as best actress and David Luther for best camera. "Das Boot" is currently available via Sky Ticket, Sky Go and on demand. ZDF has now acquired the broadcasting rights to the event series from Sky. The first season will be shown in winter 2019 on ZDF and in the ZDFmediathek.
"Das Boot" has now been sold in more than 100 countries. The series will be shown on Hulu in the USA, Starzplay (France and Latin America), AMC (Spain and Portugal), VRT (Belgium), NRK (Norway), SVT (Sweden), Czech TV (Czech Republic), Epix/ Viasat (Russia, Central and Eastern Europe), MNET (South Africa), SBS (Australia), TVNZ (New Zealand). Internationally, the series is distributed by co-production partner Sonar Entertainment.
“We are very proud that we have met the taste of our subscribers with our Sky Original Production 'Das Boot'. Due to the positive response from the audience, it was easy for us to put a second season into production and we look forward to presenting the first season to a wide audience on ZDF shortly before the second season is broadcast on Sky.”
Elke Walthelm, Executive Vice President Content at Sky Germany
Production of the second season has already been decided, filming will begin this year and the new episodes will be premiered on Sky.
“I am delighted that the free TV premiere of the gripping Sky series 'Das Boot' will take place on ZDF. And all the more so because we have had a long and successful working relationship with director Andreas Prochaska and the production company Bavaria.”
Simone Emmelius, head of ZDF's main editorial department for feature films
The story of the new event series "Das Boot" begins in the fall of 1942, at a time when submarine warfare was becoming increasingly brutal during World War II.

The U-612 in occupied France is ready for its maiden voyage. Among them is the new kaleu of the submarine, Klaus Hoffmann (Rick Okon). The 40-strong crew quickly struggled with the cramped and claustrophobic conditions under water. You will be pushed to your limits physically and mentally. Eventually, interpersonal tensions begin to severely test morale and loyalty on board.
Meanwhile, in the port city of La Rochelle, Simone Strasser's (Vicky Krieps) world spirals out of control. Simone is torn between her sense of belonging to Germany, the Resistance and a dangerous, forbidden love. She learns more about herself than ever before and puts her life in danger. The ingredients seem to be right: fast-paced chases, action sequences, humorous dialogues - and last but not least an international cast. This "buddy movie" with the duo of Omar Sy and Luiz Guzmán is more than a "typical French comedy".
