A board game is to be released for the US sci-fi drama Tales from the Loop. As Free League Publishing announced, after the financing of crowdfunding on Kickstarter, sales via the in-house shop and in stores are now also planned. It should start on February 8th.

Board games based on video games were yesterday, today series have to serve as templates for analog game ideas. The publisher Fria Ligan (Free League) had already successfully financed the board game Tales from the Loop through Kickstarter - around 330.000 euros were raised through the campaign, which was “through” in less than three hours.

First a series and tabletop RPG, now a board game

Tales from the Loop is a series-format science fiction drama penned by Nathaniel Halpern. The original, on the other hand, has its roots in Sweden, more precisely: with the Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag. Tales from the Loop was released as a tabletop role-playing game in 2017.

In the board game, players slip into the role of young people who are investigating a mysterious phenomenon that threatens their homeland. The highlight is the time loops: Every day begins at school, but as soon as the bell rings, players can use the time they have before dinner and homework to go on a journey of discovery.

So you can play through one of the branching scenarios - from extraterrestrial plants to visitors from the past - or use a sandbox with the Mystery Islands mode of the board game. The scenarios should have a playing time of 90 to 120 minutes and be tackled with up to five players - there is an optional solo mode in which the player uses two of the children. The board game contains eight scenarios. There are also six miniature robots in the box.

The real star of Tales from the Loop is the game world: Simon Stålenhag designed an alternative Sweden in the 1980s and 1990s in which the events take place. One can understand the idea as a kind of Scandinavian Scythe.

The board game for Tales From the Loop should be available from February 8th in stores and online shops of Fria Ligan.
