With The Dark & The Wicked, a new horror film is starting in the cinemas - and the trailer has it all. The portal Screen Anarchy describes the film in a review as the "scariest film of the year". After all, the superlative seems to be within the realm of possibility, as the horror trailer impressively demonstrates.

The Dark & The Wicked is a horror film directed by Bryan Bertino, who previously directed The Strangers or The Blackcoat's Daughter. His new work debuted at the Fantasia International Film Festival in the summer of 2020 and was released in the US around two months later through RLJE Films. the film is scheduled to hit the cinemas on April 14, 2022.

Trailer shows diabolical farming horror

Julie-Oliver Touchstone (including Preacher), Xander Berkeley (Candyman, Barb Wire) and Marin Ireland, known from Y: Last Man, play in The Dark & The Wicked. The trailer reveals little about the story overall, but the framework is sufficient to get at least a little scary: Two siblings are brought back to their family on an old farm in Texas. The mother seems insane and hangs dead in the barn one night, of course only after she chopped off a few fingers in the kitchen.

It is unclear why exactly things are not going right on the farm. Pure madness or evil forces or both? At least the trailer for perhaps the “scariest film of the year” leaves viewers with unanswered questions. The images of horror are sometimes not particularly subtle: the announcement snippet already contains one or the other disgusting sequence that also makes the horror visible. And because it's sort of a classic farm horror movie, the devil isn't missing either.

From mid-April 2022, fans can see for themselves whether The Dark & The Wicked is actually the "scariest movie of the year" or whether individual critics were a bit too euphoric.
