There are video games that develop into real phenomena in a very short space of time. A new product from publisher Raw Fury has exactly that potential: it's called Star Trucker. The name says it all: the developers have simply transported a trucking simulator into space.
Many developers usually rack their brains when creating new games – but sometimes the recipe for success is simple. You just have to think of it. That's probably what happened with Star Trucker. Raw Fury and Monster & Monster mix the well-known and popular content of a trucking simulator, but the setting is not based on country roads and big city traffic, but instead lets players whizz through space with their cargo. What sounds simple is actually quite complex. Many fans are currently celebrating Star Trucker. The idea is popular
Star Trucker is "a must"
"Star Trucker invites players to embark on the ultimate open road and search for fame and fortune in the vastness of space," Raw Fury himself writes about the new video game, which has been released for PC and Xbox Series X|S. Star Trucker is also available via the Xbox Game Pass for console and PC, which is sure to contribute to its popularity, as even those players who have little to do with cargo simulators can try out the title. Perhaps it is the vastness of space that convinces and not the truck aspect. "As a big fan of space simulations, I was absolutely thrilled with Star Trucker," writes a player on the Steam platform in a fan review of Star Trucker. He particularly likes the adventures and freedom in the vastness of space. Experiencing that is "a must."
To ensure that there is actually something new to discover, the developers of Monster & Monster have opted for a space with an exciting touch: the infinite expanses are designed in a retro sci-fi style inspired by Americana. Anyone travelling on the hyper-highway and completing missions can look forward to some interesting discoveries, even visually. The rest is familiar: you transport goods, including on fuel-intensive long-distance journeys, tremble when driving with hazardous goods deliveries, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet in your own space truck. The game is a balancing act between a sometimes quite complex simulation and a cozy game for coffee junkies. The journeys provide cool moments, not least because of the entertaining CB radio and the space trucker radio: you can hear tracks by musicians such as Tom Bromley from Los Campesinos or the composer Randall Breneman.
Fans are celebrating the video game, but there is also some criticism so soon after its release on September 3rd. Some game mechanics are not fully developed, especially the management system for fuel and annoying asteroids. Fans of the title counter that it also depends on your personal playing style in order to be able to master challenges. Flying relaxed instead of going full throttle - for many, that is the magic formula for reaching your destination without any major problems. Some players are also annoyed by the balancing, especially when it comes to spending on energy cells. This is what most of the money is spent on, the criticism goes. In the opinion of some fans, the developers could do with some work here.
The developers are currently working on a feature that many players consider to be a must for a space game: HOTAS support. If you can fly or drive through space with flight control accessories in the foreseeable future, that would give Star Trucker another kick. Because the skill aspect also comes into play in this simulator. You have to avoid obstacles, for example.
However, the majority of opinions about Star Trucker are extremely positive, some enthusiastic. It is "a bit like Euro Truck Simulator on drugs in space" or simply an "absolutely fantastic game" that connects two worlds. Some other fans are simply happy that publishers and developers are daring to try new concepts: "No zombies, a game without zombies, it's great that something like this still exists today!" writes a Steam user who also likes Star Trucker. The cost of the video game is manageable at €24,50 - at least the title can be played at any time with a Game Pass subscription at no additional cost. Star Trucker is a "really fun game", according to the reviews, albeit from a player who has only been flying through space for a few hours. Around 75 percent of the now just over 1.400 reviews are ultimately positive.
