Last year, Northgard: Uncharted Lands the analogue version of the popular digital strategy title thanks to Board Game Box in Germany and was quite convincingNow the Swiss publisher is releasing the two expansions Warchiefs and Wilderness, both of which were already released in Kickstarter of Northgard: Uncharted Lands. Find out here whether the two expansions are worth it.
Warchiefs
The Warchiefs expansion brings two, in our opinion, very important innovations to the game: the eponymous leaders of the individual clans and the personal game boards. While the Warchiefs come with additional individual bonuses and make the game a little more asymmetrical, the personal game boards help to start the game even more easily, as you now have a complete overview.
In addition, the individual Warchiefs come with beautifully designed miniatures that visually enhance the whole game. The miniature of the bear Kajja in particular is a nice visual addition. As a special unit of the bear clan, Kajja was previously only represented as a piece on the game board in the basic game.
In our opinion, Warchiefs is a sensible addition to the basic game, as it takes Northgard: Uncharted Lands up a notch in terms of gameplay and appearance. The new Warchiefs bonuses bring out completely new tactics, and thanks to the game boards, newcomers can also get into the game very easily.
Wilderness
The Wilderness expansion brings new landscape tiles and new monsters into the game, some of which are permanently connected to a landscape tile. The landscape tiles bring new terrain into the game that influences the game a little more. There are now impassable borders that cannot be crossed by units and can be placed in a tactically clever way, making it more difficult for enemy units to attack. There is a lake that gives all players with units near it additional food, as well as poisonous pools where we lose a unit round after round. It is nice that there are now geysers where we get a unit every round if we own this area. This is a useful addition to the resource landscapes from the basic game.
The new creatures from the expansion are a little stronger and therefore more dangerous than those from the base game. They definitely make the game a little more exciting and ruthless. In addition, the Wyvern is now a creature that has its own home on the game board. If it is defeated, it flies back to its nest. Only there can it be defeated for good.
For us, Wilderness is the weaker expansion for Northgard: Uncharted Lands. It really just gives us more of what we already know from the base game, which isn't really bad. People who really enjoy playing Northgard and want to add a little more challenge to the familiar game definitely have the opportunity to expand their game here.
