Krafton announced that PUBG: Battlegrounds was the top-ranked game on Steam during the transition to free-to-play on January 12, 2022. The shooter, which can now be played for free, is experiencing an enormous growth spurt.

The game reached the milestone with more than 690.000 active players who threw themselves into the Battlegrounds in one day. The move to free-to-play has not only made the globally popular battle royale title more accessible than ever, it has also fueled growth rates similar to the game's initial release in 2017.

Significant increase in player numbers

In the week following the F2P transition, the game saw a 486 percent increase in new players, exceeding the growth rate from 2017. In certain territories such as the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Southeast Asia and South America, the percentage growth was even greater (537 percent). Additionally, the game saw a significant increase in average play time compared to the week prior to F2P launch. While these increased by 100 percent on PC and consoles compared to the previous week, playtime for PlayStation players increased by 400 percent.

Users are also drawn to the new tutorials, which include Basic Training Mode, AI Training Matches, and Lobby Tutorials. According to internal data, this was the most-played content during the transition period. The tutorials are designed to effectively integrate new players and welcome back experienced players who have been on hiatus for a while. The most played maps since January 12 are the recently released map Taego and the fan-favorite map Erangel.

To celebrate the recent milestone and transition to the F2P model, Krafton will also host a Check-In Dinner Event. This event rewards the most active players. Any player who plays the game for at least one hour between 01:00 CET on January 28th and 00:59 CET on January 31st will receive a special reward. Each day of the event, players will receive another thank you for checking in. In addition, players who play the game at least three times for one hour until February 18th at 00:59 CET will earn an exclusive Orbital Vanguard skin. Each week there is a unique color variant of the Orbital Vanguard skin (Cadet Green, Cadet Pink, Cadet Yellow, and Cadet Blue). Those who collect all variants will get a fifth color variant as a bonus - Cadet Red. More details can be found here.

When PUBG: Battlegrounds entered Steam Early Access in 2017, it popularized the battle royale gaming genre. To date, the game has sold more than 75 million copies on PC and consoles, making it one of the best-selling games of all time. In the nearly five years since release, PUBG: Battlegrounds has continued to build on its early success and evolved with constant in-game updates. Including new maps, game modes and gameplay features.
