At around 800 euros, the Playstation 5 Pro is no bargain. If it were up to the black marketeers, fans would pay even more for the console. The problem for the scalpers is that Sony is leading them by the nose.
At the launch, it was initially unclear how the scene would receive the completely revamped console, after all, Sony had made a decent announcement with the price of around 800 euros. It is now clear: It remains unclear how successful the Playstation 5 Pro will be. Devices are readily available in stores - this is likely to annoy many scalpers who now have to sell their devices at a loss.

Black market traders are also trying to make a lot of money from scarce goods in the gaming segment. This is the essential prerequisite for the business model of the so-called scalpers: products are unlikely to be available in stores so that they can charge high prices. With the Playstation 5 Pro, this has obviously backfired for some secondary dealers, as the platform VGC reports. According to the report, users on eBay in the United States and Great Britain, for example, are making losses. The reason: fans buy their PS5 Pro consoles in the store as usual. Scalpers had speculated on exactly the opposite - and were obviously quite wrong.
It remains unclear what this really means regarding the success of the Playstation 5 Pro. Can Sony simply meet the high demand? Or is demand not as high as the company had hoped? Both are possible: On the one hand, fans could respond positively to the more powerful console, especially in combination with the improved games, and see this as an added value, even in relation to the high price.
On the other hand, it is also possible that fans find the price-performance ratio inadequate and refrain from purchasing the Playstation 5 Pro.
Sony's president Hiroki Totoki is at least optimistic. He stated in an investor conference that they do not expect the higher price to have a negative impact on sales. A similar effect was previously seen, for example, with the Nintendo Switch and its improved OLED model. Hardcore gamers often bought it twice - but the newer Switch console with its better display and a much cheaper price than the PS5 Pro also had better sales arguments. However, because Sony also wants to sell the Playstation 5 Pro primarily to die-hard gaming enthusiasts, the Christmas business could now give an indication of its success.
The external drive for the Playstation 5 Pro is currently in demand. The accessory is sold out at many retailers - and scalpers want to make a decent buck here too. In the case of the drive, they are actually succeeding, because on various platforms the price on the secondary market is significantly higher than the normal retail price of around 80 euros.
