Sony has introduced the Playstation 5 Pro. More power should make games more beautiful and run more smoothly at high frame rates – the console is scheduled to be delivered on November 7th. However, this technological leap also comes at a price.
Sony Interactive is digging pretty deep into fans' pockets: the company is charging 799 euros for the Playstation 5 Pro, which is scheduled to be delivered on November 7, 2024. For comparison: the current slim version of the console costs 450 or 520 euros, depending on the model. For the promised 45 percent increase in GPU performance for the Playstation 5 Pro, Sony is therefore charging around 75 percent more money.
Nine minutes about the new Playstation 5
Chief developer Mark Cerny announced the "most powerful console Sony has ever made" in a video that was around nine minutes long. It has a lot of high-tech built in - and that costs money. Sony therefore saved the big shock for the end of the presentation. The release date and prices in the various regions of the world were shown on a still image without comment. In Germany, the completely revamped console will have a list price of 799 euros. Many fans think that's pretty steep. That's "crazy", "impossible", "completely excessive".
"Imagine paying 200 euros more for some background details," reads one comment. Other fans see the lack of a drive as a no-go, especially at this price. The price announcement is a "failure on the level of Concord," complains one YouTube user. He is alluding to Sony's most recent failure. The hero shooter was a colossal flop. Sony even stopped sales and promised players refunds.
It should be no secret that Sony's production costs - like other companies' - have risen in recent months. Installing high-tech hardware therefore comes at a price. However, many fans apparently did not expect the costs to skyrocket so much.
Around 800 euros without frills
Especially since the 799 euros only represents the basic equipment. If you want a stand, you have to pay an extra 20 euros. The missing Blu-Ray drive can be connected optionally - but must also be purchased. The costs then rise significantly to over 900 euros. Existing accessories are compatible.
The size of the console remains unchanged, the dimensions are the same as the previous models. There are, however, a lot of changes to the internals. The graphics processor is said to deliver around 45 percent more performance, mainly thanks to the faster memory, as Mark Cerny explains. There is also "Advanced Ray Tracing" for more realistic light and reflection effects. And a more detailed image is said to be possible with "PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution" (PSSR for short). The performance increase should be particularly noticeable in cases where players previously had to choose between a performance or quality mode. The maximum graphics should now be possible at 60 fps.

Sony has already presented some titles that will benefit from the new performance resources - they are all real blockbusters: the new Assassin's Creed Shadows is included, but also existing titles such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part 2 and the Harry Potter game Hogwarts Legacy. The video clips shown look great. It will soon become clear whether fans will ultimately accept the cost increase for the performance increase. The console is due to be delivered on November 7th; pre-orders should start earlier accordingly.
To make the Playstation 5 Pro visually distinguishable from the weaker models, Sony has given the new premium console a few black stripes.
