Fans who don't have a Playstation 5 yet, but would like to have one, must have been very annoyed: Sony has increased the manufacturer's recommended retail price by 50 euros - with immediate effect. And what about the Xbox Series X?
Sony has also increased the prices for the two Playstation 5 versions for the European market. Accordingly, the manufacturer's recommended price is now 549,99 euros for the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. The PS5 Digital Edition now costs 449,99 euros.
PS5 significantly more expensive: Sony gives reasons
Anyone who already has a Playstation 5 should have shrugged their shoulders indifferently in the face of the price increase report. Those who had previously hoped for the console at the normal price are now looking into the tube: the Playstation 5 now costs 50 euros more on the German market. There are obvious reasons for this, as Sony confirms: According to this, the company sees high inflation worldwide, as well as unfavorable currency developments. Both affect consumers and increase the pressure on many industries.
"Due to these difficult economic conditions, Sony Interactive Entertainment has made the difficult decision to lower the suggested retail price (MSRP) of the PlayStation 5 in select markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Asia Pacific (APAC), Latin America ( LATAM) and Canada,” it said. According to Sony, there will be no price increase in the USA.
However, the fundamental problem is not solved: The Playstation 5 is still extremely rare. According to Sony, the priorities are to make the power console available.
And Xbox?
Console fans now have two options to save money: downgrade their own desire, meaning buy a Playstation 5 Digital Edition instead of the hard drive edition - or switch to the competition and buy an Xbox Series X|S . Because at the moment it doesn't look like Microsoft will raise prices.
In principle, the market conditions also affect Microsoft and Xbox, although the company recently issued a statement to Windows Central* officially confirms that the current suggested retail price will not change: it will therefore remain around 300 euros for the Xbox Series S and around 500 euros for the Xbox Series X. “We are constantly evaluating our store to offer our fans great gaming options provide,” said a Microsoft spokesman.
Based on the statements, one should not assume that Microsoft will never increase console prices, but this is not planned at the moment. Whether and to what extent the Xbox Series X|S could become more expensive in the future depends largely on the market situation. Microsoft has also certainly registered the anger of the Playstation fans, it should make it much more difficult for the group to bring price increases to the market anyway - after all, you don't want to scare off the Xbox fans, or only if there are no other options. Meanwhile, Microsoft can benefit from the PS5 trouble with the Xbox Series X|S. In contrast to the Playstation 5, the Xbox Series X is now not only a bit faster and cheaper, but also available for purchase.
