Sony has good sales figures with devices from the Playstation family. If you believe a current report from DigiTimes, Sony wants to reach new milestones with the next-gen Playstation 5 console - and in a shorter time than before.
In the report* the claim is made that the Playstation 5 will be delivered around 120 million times worldwide over a period of five years. This is what anonymous sources from the PS5 supply chain in Taiwan claim.
Playstation 5: life cycle around five years
What could be behind it is more exciting than the pure sales figure: The life cycle of the Playstation 5 should be shorter than that of the current-gen consoles Playstation 4 and Xbox One. If you follow the information from the anonymous source in the report, the PS5 cycle is five years, with the current consoles it was one to two years more.
Sales should move between 120 and 170 million copies after this time. Quite exciting: The numbers are in a range that is around twice as high as that which Microsoft expects for the Xbox Series X. Mathematically, the Redmond-based company would then forecast between 60 and 85 million console sales.
The numbers are gigantic, but not unrealistic. The Playstation 4 has sold a little over 110 million times after six years. Sony announced this in March. Anyway, Sony seems to be running production at full speed. The company had already announced that it would have produced around ten million units of the PS5 by December. According to reports, full production of the console has already started.
What is still missing is a price for the Playstation 5. Sony boss Jim Ryan recently noted that the PS5 should have a balanced price-performance ratio. So you pay for what you actually get in terms of performance.
