Paper Mario: The Origami King is released for Nintendo Switch already on July 17th The Mario role-playing game will be the first offshoot of the game series for Nintendo's hybrid console - the expectations among fans are correspondingly high. A lot of information about Paper Mario: The Origami King is now known. We will therefore give you an overview of the details that you should definitely know in advance of the release.

It hasn't been long since Nintendo announced the new offshoot of the "Paper Mario" series, but rumors about the video game have been around for a long time. Already at the beginning of the year, the Nintendo community was seething: A new Paper Mario could appear, it was rumored. Those rumors persisted until Nintendo actually officially announced the game, titled Paper Mario: The Origami King, which happened in mid-May. Almost exactly two months after the reveal, the game is in stores. On July 17th, fans can finally play the new Paper Mario.

Paper Mario on tour for the sixth time

The charming series of games is entering its sixth round with Paper Mario: The Origami King. Paper Mario was first published in 2000 in Japan for the Nintendo 64 game console, and a year later also in Europe and North America. Another four titles were published by 2016, then Mario took a break. Now, around four years after Paper Mario: Color Splash, the plumber can get started again. For the first time on the Nintendo Switch. Instead of quick bouncing, Paper Mario is a bit more leisurely, the genre is a completely different one. Paper Mario: The Origami King can also be assigned to role-playing games.

With the help of the first official trailer, fans can guess what to expect:

This trailer was also the core of the announcement. The game was not announced in a direct show, nor had Nintendo built a suspense around the release. Paper Mario: The Origami King was just there at some point. Responsible for this - as for so much this year - is the coronavirus pandemic.

Nintendo had also intensified its work from home in order to react to the crisis. The otherwise obligatory video shows suffered as a result. Whether and when this will change again depends largely on the course of the pandemic.

Origami King becomes Paper-Mario with new ideas

Paper Mario: The Origami King will not be a mere remake or even a copy of its predecessor. From the start, the developers of Intelligent System wanted to ensure that this title contained fresh, new ideas. They wanted to create a completely new gaming experience. One thing remains, however: the wrestling matches. The game's producer, Kensuke Tanabe, has already worked on them together with Naohiko Aoyama, who is responsible for Color Splash.

In a second trailer, Nintendo focused on the different game environments:

In addition, there was the decision not to let Mario act as a member of a permanently identical group. That was still the case with the first three series offshoots. Instead, you meet unique comrades in every game area, which should be hugely beneficial to the gameplay. Each ally is based on the design of the respective play area. The only exception is Bowser Junior, but he also plays a central role in the story. And that is exactly one of the core pieces of Paper Mario: The Origami King.

The story of Paper Mario: The Origami King

It all starts with an invitation to the origami festival. Mario and Luigi make their way to Princess Peach. When they arrive, however, the two warriors notice that the nasty King Olly has confiscated the castle and wrapped it in paper.

But that's not all: the main villain wants to subjugate the whole world and wrap it up colorfully. The "King" makes Bowser's army his own. It goes without saying that Mario, Luigi and allies can't simply ignore this. And so begins the role-playing adventure of the cardboard plumbers in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario gets help from the already mentioned Bowser Jr., but also from King Olly's sister OIivia. One of the first characters created was "Bobby", a Bob-omb.

Paper Mario: The Origami King works with an open world

Instead of a fixed sequence of levels, the developers at Paper Mario: The Origami King are relying on the idea of a more open game world. Completely in contrast to its predecessors such as Super Paper Mario or Paper Mario: Sticker Star fans can freely explore the areas - just like in the first two parts of the series of games.

There are a variety of play areas, each with different basic themes and individual looks. This includes not only the princess' castle or the city "Toad Town", but also water areas such as the Great Sea. The latter can even be explored by boat. There are also other biomes, such as a jungle world, a forest landscape or a desert area shrouded in darkness - each with a completely unique design concept.

The gameplay is also based on the open world chakarter of Paper Mario: The Origami King. Mario and his companions have to master different challenges, solving puzzles, interacting with NPCs and having conversations and of course collecting items and coins. Mario also uses new skills to manipulate objects in the game world or to solve puzzles. Of course, everything adheres to the paper theme of the game: For example, Mario can tear down parts of the game environment and thus reveal secrets.

Tactical wrestling matches

Enemies are encountered by players on a regular basis. The fights are fought on an alternative battle screen. However, Mario can gain an advantage by attacking opponents in the "normal world" first, namely then Mario receives an additional attack. In the open play areas, however, the plumber can smash objects such as trees or grass with his hammer. It then rains confetti that can be used to plug holes in the world. This is how Mario gets more items, including coins.

Mario also encounters folded Toads again and again while exploring the game world - and he can save them. The rescued then make their way to Toad Town, where they open shops. In addition, Toads help solve puzzles or serve as an aid in battle by spending coins and then receiving healing or useful items.

In the fights, Paper Mario: The Origami King also relies on the system that made the predecessor. The comparatively simple ring system works with concentric circles on which there are enemies. Players then have to turn and slide the rings so that Mario can fight the opponents. In this way you increase Mario's attack power, and there is always the option of using coins to get reinforcements or to prolong the fight. The plumber attacks with his hammer or he kicks. Timing is also an important factor in wrestling matches. The highlight: Each fight has a time limit and a limited number of ring movements.

In the new gameplay video, Nintendo shows what fans can expect:

The fights against bosses are a little different. Players must first build a path to the boss by turning and sliding movements. Once Mario has gotten close enough to the villain, players have to attack the bosses' weak points.

Paper Mario: The Origami King will be released on July 17th for Nintendo Switch, both as a physical box version and as a download. Exact information on the scope of the game is not yet available. Paper Mario: The Origami King is aimed at fans aged six and over.
