"DLSS is one of our finest inventions that made real-time ray tracing possible, with DLSS 3 another quantum leap for gamers and creators," said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. "Our pioneering work on RTX Neural Rendering has opened up a whole universe of possibilities in which artificial intelligence plays a central role in the creation of virtual worlds."
The combination of ray tracing and AI technologies has revolutionized video games by enabling dramatic improvements in image quality and massive increases in performance at the same time. A feat that wasn't possible before GeForce RTX.
Powered by new fourth-generation Tensor cores and a new Optical Flow Accelerator from GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs, DLSS 3 is the latest version of NVIDIA and introduces a new feature called “Optical Multi Frame Generation”.
Optical Multi Frame Generation creates entirely new images and not just pixels, resulting in amazing performance gains. The new Optical Flow Accelerator, integrated into the NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture, analyzes two consecutive frames in the game and calculates motion vector data for objects and elements that appear in the frame but are not modeled by traditional game engine motion vectors are. This significantly reduces visual anomalies in AI rendering of elements such as particles, reflections, shadows, and lighting.
Pairs of Super Resolution frames from the game, along with engine and optical flow motion vectors, are fed into a neural network that analyzes the data and automatically generates an additional frame for each frame rendered by the game - a first in real-time rendering of To play. Combining the DLSS-generated images with the DLSS Super Resolution frames enables DLSS 3 to reconstruct seven-eighths of the displayed pixels with AI, boosting frame rates by four times compared to a game without DLSS.
In addition, the RTX 40 series GPUs offer new technological features, including:
- Streaming multiprocessors with shader performance of up to 83 teraflops - more than double the previous generation
- Third-generation RT cores with up to 191 teraflops for effective ray tracing - 2,8 times more than the previous generation
- 1,32th generation Tensor cores with up to 5 tensor petaflops - 8x more than the previous generation with FPXNUMX acceleration
- Shader Execution Reordering (SER) improves execution efficiency by rescheduling shading workloads on the fly. This makes better use of the GPU's resources. As significant an innovation as out-of-order execution for CPUs, SER improves ray-tracing performance by 25x and framerates in games by up to XNUMX percent
- Ada Optical Flow Accelerator with twice the performance enables DLSS 3 to predict motion in a scene, allowing the neural network to increase frame rate while maintaining image quality
- Architectural improvements tightly coupled with custom TSMC-4N process technology result in up to a 2x improvement in power efficiency
Because DLSS frame generation is post-processed on the GPU, it can boost frame rates even when the game is CPU-limited. For CPU-limited games, such as those with high physics content or very large game worlds, DLSS 3 enables the GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs to render the game at up to twice the frame rate than the CPU in the location is
The DLSS-3 integrations also include NVIDIA Reflex, which synchronizes the GPU and CPU for optimal response time and low system latency. Since DLSS 3 is based on the DLSS 2 integrations, game developers can easily integrate the solution into existing titles that already support DLSS 2 or NVIDIA Streamline. DLSS 3 is supported on GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs and will be introduced on October 12th with the GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs.

For decades, rendering ray-traced scenes with physically correct lighting in real time has been considered the holy grail of graphics. At the same time, the geometric complexity of environments and objects has continued to increase as 3D games and graphics strive to represent the real world as accurately as possible.
Physically correct graphics require enormous computing power. Modern ray tracing games like Cyberpunk 2077 perform over 600 ray tracing calculations on each pixel just to determine the lighting - a 16x increase over the first ray tracing games launched four years ago.
The new third generation RT cores have been enhanced to enable twice as fast ray triangle intersection tests and include two important new hardware units. An "Opacity Micromap Engine" speeds up ray tracing of alpha test geometries by XNUMXx, and a "Micro-Mesh Engine" creates micro-meshes on the fly to generate additional geometry. The micro-mesh engine offers the benefits of increased geometric complexity without the traditional performance and memory costs of complex geometries.
The RTX 40 series GPUs and DLSS 3 offer new possibilities for Nvidia Studio developers. 3D artists can render fully ray-traced environments with accurate physics and realistic materials, and view the changes in real time and without proxies.
Video editing and live streaming also benefit from improved GPU performance and new dual 1th generation AVXNUMX encoders. There are three updates for the Nvidia Broadcast Software Development Kit that are now available for partners. These include face expression estimation, eye contact, and virtual background quality improvements.
Nvidia Omniverse, part of the Nvidia Studio software suite, will soon be expanded to include Nvidia RTX Remix, a modding platform for creating stunning RTX remasters of classic games. With RTX Remix, modders can easily capture game assets, automatically enhance materials with powerful AI tools, and quickly enable RTX with ray tracing and DLSS.
