The train left. That's not always a good thing, but it is for Archona Games. The publisher has launched its crowdfunding campaign for the route building game Small Railroad Empires Kickstarter launched – and it has been extremely successful so far. The fetch-and-drop board game all about trains is another title in Archona Games' Small Empires series. Those interested now have until May 15th; a total of around 14.000 euros is needed for the campaign to be successful.

Zug board games have always existed and will continue to do so in the future. One of the complex train game madness 18XX to the shallow Ticket to Ride, the topic keeps finding its way into the board game world. The setting of Small Railroad Empires by Archona Games is therefore not entirely new. However, it doesn't have to be, because the focus of the game is not on "Railroad" but also on "Small".

Small Railroad Empires: Train tactics in your pocket

The idea behind the "Small Empires" series is not new to Archona: Samurai was used last, before that it was spaceships. However, the idea of offering a small-format board game is well received. Small Railroad Empires is also likely to be successfully crowdfunded on Kickstarter. Almost 14.000 euros are needed for this, two-thirds are already done. Over 300 so-called backers have already signaled their support and invested 29 US dollars. This is apparently one of the advantages of Archona Games' mini-series: the prices are on the lower end.

The train board game is aimed at two to four players and is based on a mixture of bring-and-bring mechanics, route construction and set collection. The idea behind the game is well known: players set up their transport company and do what train operators do: make money.

In the game, which lasts around 30 to 90 minutes, the players gradually connect cities and factories with tracks and transport goods. There is then a fixed amount of money and influence depending on the length of the route. There are also some special achievements that can be achieved for a bonus. It seems as if Archona Games would also combine with Small Railroad Empires those playful core factors that are necessary for a successful train board game: strategic possibilities, a modular playing field for a bit of variety, a mix of three basic mechanics that match the topic.

The game fits into a small box - that's the purpose of this "Small Empires" series. Fans can also book a scenario package directly. This includes parts of the game plan with a Europe and USA theme and possibly others, depending on the “stretch goals” achieved.

The Kickstarter campaign The board game runs until May 15th. Small Railroad Empires should appear in December.
