Electronic Arts and the Middle-earth licensee are collaborating on a new mobile game set in the Lord of the Rings universe. The video game titled The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth becomes a Collectible Role-Playing Game (RPG). Electronic Arts has already announced the start of a regionally limited beta phase: the starting signal will be given in the summer.
The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth will be a collectible RPG based on a free-to-play model. If that sounds familiar – not just by name: Electronic Arts is on board Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes already established a similar title on the market. EA has not yet published many details about the new mobile game with The Lord of the Rings license, but it is likely that the playful design will at least be based on the Star Wars collecting game.
The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth – Summer Beta
Electronic Arts is partnering with the company behind the Middle-earth license, part of The Saul Zaentz Company, for the mobile game. According to EA, the title should complement the publisher's "growing mobile portfolio". "We are incredibly excited to be working with The Saul Zaentz Company and Middle-earth Enterprises on the next generation of mobile role-playing games," said Malachi Boyle, vice president of mobile RPG at Electronic Arts.
The team consists of fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Every day they would bring their "tremendous passion and talents" to provide players with an authentic experience. The features listed for The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth are faithful graphics, cinematic animations and stylized optics. Fans will be able to battle with their favorite characters.
Speaking of fights. According to the first information about The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, they are based on turns – you already know that from Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes. There is also the option of collecting characters from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, presumably using a similar system to the collectible role-playing games already established on the market, where you have to create a character from a set number of "building blocks" - or can just buy with real money to save time. The choice of the development team also points to similarities: Capital Games is responsible for the project, and thus the game company that has already created Galaxy of Heroes. According to EA, the new mobile game is in active development.
"Players will fight through iconic stories from the world of Tolkien and take on the great evils of Middle-earth," explains EA about the story background. Electronic Arts has a history of releasing PC and console titles based on The Lord of the Rings books and films. Taking the concept of Galaxy of Heroes as a basis for The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth mobile game, players will be able to experience new stories and events on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit on their smartphone or tablet in stages.
The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth is expected to enter a limited regional beta this summer. There is no release date yet.
