Games Workshop has announced The Hobbit: Hunt for the Arkenstone, a new board game set in the Lord of the Rings universe. With miniatures and tons of cards, fans can go on a search for the legendary Dwarven Stone.
Admittedly, the board game industry has no shortage of Lord of the Rings titles. New releases based on Tolkien's fantasy universe are released regularly. And for good reason: the setting of classic fantasy leaves room for narrative and familiar experiences, the characters are as popular as they are strange, and there is no shortage of epic moments. One of them: the search for the Arkenstone.
A cinematic gaming experience
Familiar adventures in Middle Earth can be experienced anew from the end of August with the board game "The Hobbit Motion Picture Trilogy: Hunt for the Arkenstone: A Middle-earth Adventure Game" - in short: The Hobbit: Hunt for the Arkenstone. It is a cooperative game, with game fans taking on the roles of Thorin Oakenshield and his allies to retrieve the legendary Arkenstone.
To make sure that this isn't too easy, Arzog, the fork-handed orc villain known from the film, provides plenty of resistance. Games Workshop describes the new game as exciting and action-packed. Two or more players can play; the title is aimed at fans aged twelve and over.
The core of the whole thing – and typical of Games Workshop – are the 15 included miniatures with which players can recreate the scenes from the Hobbit film “The Battle of the Five Armies” on the table.
In principle, the use of the license is nothing new for Games Workshop: Even though the publisher is primarily known for its Warhammer franchise, a corresponding Lord of the Rings strategy game has been part of the miniature specialist's program for many years.
The Hobbit: Hunt for the Arkenstone is completely different, however, because it is a "real board game". The publisher has tried this several times in the past, sometimes with more, sometimes with less success - there have also been projects for Lord of the Rings. These spinoffs often aim to bring the basic mechanics from Games Workshop's main series to a new player base.
Games Workshop is asking 65 euros for The Hobbit: Hunt for the Arkenstone. The currently available pre-orders are scheduled to be shipped on August 31st.
