Big fun doesn't always need a big box. This is demonstrated by the connoisseur card game Black Hole Buccaneers from Pegasus Spiele skillfully. Here the players go on a treasure hunt in the distant future on the edge of black holes and try to turn humanity's scrap into points. The drafting game, packed with pop culture references, is available now.
Great adventure, fame and untold riches - as Black Hole Buccaneers, players are well on their way there. They have made it their mission to collect ancient collectibles from orbiting black holes that were dumped there hundreds of years ago as mankind's garbage for final disposal. But caution is advised: If the players collect too much, they risk being sucked into the black hole.

Black Hole Buccaneers is a drafting game and runs over exactly three rounds. In each round, players travel to a different black hole. This specifies how many hand cards each person gets and has a different threshold value. The objects collected at the end of the round may be about as heavy in total. If they are heavier, the players will probably be swallowed up by the black hole and get no points. However, the threshold value is initially only a guide value that can still change by the end of the run.
The hand cards feature items from seven different categories: Starships, Toys, Time Machine Parts, Shapeshifters, Robots, Artifacts, and Relics. Anyone who knows a little bit about pop culture will recognize one or the other "junk" from film, television and the toy industry, for example the "Stuffed Oracle", the "Suicidal Mastermind" or the "Pet Transport Box".
Each of the seven categories works slightly differently. Toys, for example, are played face down. Time machine parts become more valuable the more complete the set is. Robots lose value when played at the same time as other robots. But all 67 space junk cards have two things in common: They all show both a value and a weight.

According to the proven drafting principle, the players choose a card from their hand in each turn, which they play. They pass on the rest. At the end of the round, when each person has played all but one card from their hand, there is a scoring. Then the special abilities of some cards are dealt with first, such as "surprise egg", "alien paddling pool" or "a ring". Then everyone determines the final weight of their collected scrap and the final threshold of the black hole. Those who were too greedy and exceeded the final threshold with their scrap will get nothing. The others get points depending on which round they are in and how valuable their scrap is. Whoever has collected the most points after three rounds wins.
The card game Black Hole Buccaneers by Peter Langkjær Møller is aimed at treasure hunters aged ten and over who already have some gaming experience. While the rules are pretty straightforward, it takes some skill to make the most of all the cards' special abilities. A game lasts 30 to 45 minutes and can be played with three to six people. The little connoisseur's game is now available at a recommended retail price of €12,99.
