The bat strikes again, at least indirectly. WB Games Montreal has presented a new offshoot from the Batman video game series as part of the DC Fandome - and Batman of all people does not play a role in it. Instead, the Dark Avenger sends four powerful young heroes into battle with Robin, Nightwing, Red Hood and Batgirl: the Gotham Knights.
WB Games Montreal presented Gotham Knights as the successor to Batman: Arkham Knight in the livestream of the DC fan event, and gameplay was already seen. On the other hand, there was no trace of the bat itself. The story ties in directly with the predecessor, it seems. Batman or Bruce Wayne is allegedly dead, but was able to send a message to his Bat family before his alleged death, which should continue to take care of Gotham.
Gotham Knight offers co-op gameplay
And so players control four heroic Gotham Knights through the metropolis, optionally also cooperatively: Batgirl, Robin, Red Hood and Nightwing. Each character has an individual move set, i.e. unique movements. That was already evident in the first gameplay scene. Individual "takedowns" can also be seen. What was also seen: Talon troops!

Gotham Knights can be played in solo mode, but also supports a cooperative game mode in which two players can beat opponents together. This also means that the team attacks find their way back into the game - and they make a great first impression. Without it, Gotham Knights seems to be visually impressive. The metropolis is staged in an atmospheric way, the characters' movements are smooth - the engine seems to be powerful. WB Games Montreal also put a hand in the details of the quest design for Gotham Knights: This can be seen in a sequence in which Mister Freeze appears, of course in accordance with the theme in a rather frosty area.
Also noticeable in the shown Gotham Knights gameplay video: the opponents have levels and damage figures can also be seen if you hit the opponents. The fights could therefore be designed much more foresight - possibly more persistently - than was previously the case in the series.

WB Games Montreal also revealed that they have created a "living Gotham" for Gotham Knights, which will continue to be challenged over time. Thus, the scope of the game should not only be limited to the story area and should provide motivation at least in the medium term with the release of the game. However, the developers have not revealed whether Gotham Knights is planned as a "Game as a service".
Gotham Knights will be released in 2021 for Xbox One, Playstation 4, PC and the next-gen consoles Xbox Series X and Playstation 5.
