The French comedy Belleville Cop has started in German cinemas. Anything but "low budget", this film is a mixture of all those cinematic ingredients that have already turned titles like Miami Vice, Beverly Hills Cop or Lethal Weapon into blockbusters.
Like Lethal Weapon, only in French
With Belleville Cop director Rachid Bouchareb, incidentally nominated for an Oscar because of his Cannes winner “Days of Fame”, follows in the footsteps of the cult comedy Beverly Hills Cop: So the similarities are not purely coincidental.
Baaba Keita, called Baaba, (played by Omar Sy) is a police officer in the multicultural Paris district of Belleville. He's never got out of his neighborhood because he likes the life there. In contrast to his girlfriend Lin (Diem Nguyen): She wants to go out into the world, also because of Baaba's dominant mother Zohra (Biyouna), who constantly interferes in everything. One evening Roland (Franck Gastambide) is shot in front of his childhood friend Baaba.
In order to track down the murderers, Baaba takes over Roland's job - in Miami, at the French consulate. But the French bull constantly comes into conflict with American law, his new partner Ricardo (Luis Guzmán) constantly has to knock him out of his cop colleagues.
That makes a friendship between the two difficult for the time being. But with "Miami Vice" as a role model and a gigantic cocaine deal right under their noses, the two get together, get deeper and deeper into the abyss of international drug cartels during their investigations and soon turn out to be an absolute dream team.
