The French comedy Belleville Cop has started in German cinemas. Anything but “low budget”, this film is a mixture of all those cinematic ingredients that have already turned titles like Miami Vice, Beverly Hills Cop or Lethal Weapon into blockbusters.

Like Lethal Weapon, only in French

With Belleville Cop, director Rachid Bouchareb, who incidentally was nominated for an Oscar due to his Cannes winner “Days of Fame”, is following in the footsteps of the cult comedy Beverly Hills Cop: So the similarities are not purely coincidental.

Baaba Keita, called Baaba, (played by Omar Sy) is a police officer in the multicultural Paris district of Belleville. He's never got out of his neighborhood because he likes the life there. In contrast to his girlfriend Lin (Diem Nguyen): She wants to go out into the world, also because of Baaba's dominant mother Zohra (Biyouna), who constantly interferes in everything. One evening Roland (Franck Gastambide) is shot in front of his childhood friend Baaba.

In order to track down the murderers, Baaba takes over Roland's job - in Miami, at the French consulate. But the French bull constantly comes into conflict with American law, his new partner Ricardo (Luis Guzmán) constantly has to knock him out of his cop colleagues.

That makes a friendship between the two difficult for the time being. But with "Miami Vice" as a role model and a gigantic cocaine deal right under their noses, the two get together, get deeper and deeper into the abyss of international drug cartels during their investigations and soon turn out to be an absolute dream team.

The ingredients seem to be right: fast car chases, action sequences, humorous dialogues - and last but not least, an international cast. This “buddy movie” with the duo of Omar Sy and Luiz Guzmán is more than a “typical French comedy”.

The script was written by Larry Gross, Rachid Bouchareb and Marion Doussot. Produced by Jean Bréhat, Rachid Bouchareb, Muriel Merlin, Samuel Hadida and Victor Hadida.

Belleville Cop has been in German cinemas since January 31.
