It is not yet known how the main series of Mortal Kombat will continue. Now the developers at NetherRealm Studios and publisher Warner Bros have announced a new game about the classic beating - albeit in a different form than fans might have thought.
Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is the name of the new game that Warner Bros and NetherRealm Studios will release for mobile devices running on Android and iOS operating systems. However, fans will also have to do without the classic fight. The developers are taking a completely different approach.
Onslaught: Mortal Kombat with tactical group battles
As per the brief announcement, Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will see players build a team of fighters from the well-known beat 'em up franchise and engage in real-time group battles with them. After all: There will apparently be a background story - as a kind of "overarching narrative".
"We're pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways while remaining true to its essence," said Ed Boon, Chief Creative Officer, NetherRealm Studios. "With Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, we've reimagined Mortal Kombat into a strategic team-based collectible RPG with fast-paced group melee combat that both new and existing fans can enjoy."
Everything points to a concept that is familiar from other games with similar mechanics: Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes by Electronic Arts for example. There, players collect heroes - or parts of them step by step - and put together teams for different game modes with which they then go into battle. Although the developers for Mortal Kombat: Onslaught have not yet published any details about the game, such an idea is certainly conceivable - especially since mobile games with gacha mechanics are still in vogue.
Neither the developer nor the publisher Warner Bros announced a release date for Mortal Kombat: Onslaught. Players can visit the official website of the game sign up for news.
