Metal Gear Solid will now make its way onto the gaming table at home after all: the publisher CMON recently announced the board game for the popular stealth game series. After the end of the title a little over two years ago, the comeback that fans of the game series were hoping for is now taking place.
The idea of a Metal Gear Solid board game isn't new, and neither is the author of the title being touted by CMON. On the contrary: in the second attempt it is again Emerson Matsuuchi who will now implement his creation with the help of the miniature game specialist.
After delays came the end
About two years ago that didn't work, but under IDW Games. The publisher had discontinued the project; However, no reasons were given. Before that, the game was postponed, then came the final end. Matsuuchi didn't bury his idea. The author stated that he wanted to implement the Metal Gear Solid board game in other ways. A plan: buy the license from Konami. Ultimately, things turned out differently: It is the major publisher CMON who has taken on the title.
The plans for the stealth action video game became known at the presentation of CMON's annual program. Apparently, they continue to stick closely to the template of that milestone by Hideo Kojima, who made his games debut in 1998. The game is about the super soldier Solid Snake in the fight against the Foxhound terrorist cell and its boss Liquid Snake.
In addition to the main character, Meryl Silverburg, Gray Fox (Cyborg Ninja) and Hal Emmerich will also be playable in the card-driven board game – each equipped with special skills. The stealth element from the template also finds its way into the tabletop game version of Metal Gear Solid: up to four players have to get past guards unseen, avoid their fields of vision and ultimately fulfill various tasks in a campaign consisting of 14 missions. There are also six special VR tasks based on the Special Missions expansion of the Playstation game.
Within the campaign, there will be an RPG factor with character progression. Players can supplement their basic equipment with found items and thus gradually improve their agents.
There are also two factors with recognition value: On the one hand, Solid Snake's cardboard box as "unobtrusive camouflage" and, on the other hand, boss fights against various enemies, including Ocelot, Vulcan Raven or Psycho Mantis.
For fans of Emerson Matsuuchi's board game idea from 2020, it also remains to be noted that it will be exactly this board game. This was confirmed by CMON via Instagram. There should only be a few changes, the biggest of which are visual in nature - such as the illustrations and the redesigned miniatures.
The board game should be available in stores in May 2024, you can pre-order the title for the price of regular $110. In this country, the import sales tax and shipping costs are added.
