The space adventure Mass Effect is one of the most popular video game series ever. Now it continues with a board game, as announced by the British publisher Modiphius.
The publisher Modiphius surprised everyone with its announcement of a board game for Mass Effect. The video game series has been on the market for over 15 years, with the most recent new edition being the "Legendary Edition" in 2021. The first three parts of the main series in particular were well received by fans and critics alike and are considered milestones in the industry and the genre. Now the series is to be continued, but on the board game table.
Mass Effect: Board game available via Asmodee
Modiphius Entertainment knows a lot about licenses and space board games: Homeworld and Dune are just two of the sci-fi miniature games that the British publisher has in its portfolio. Mass Effect is now set to be another strong license. To increase the chances of the board game being a success, authors Eric Lang (Blood Rage, among others) and Calvin Wong Tze Loon (Crazy Rich Asians) have joined forces.
And the timeline is also based on one of the Mass Effect titles that was well received by game fans. According to the publisher, the board game is set at the time of the events of Mass Effect 3, the video game that marked the finale for Commander Shepard and his crew.
According to Modiphius, the Mass Effect board game is aimed at up to four players, but there will also be a solo mode. The common goal: to fight the Reapers.
To ensure that the Mass Effect board game is recognizable as Mass Effect, there will be 32mm miniatures on the game board, there will be a female and a male Commander Shepard, as well as Liara, Tali, Wrex and Garrus.
According to the publisher, fans will follow a story campaign. It will also be possible to play through several times, each with a different narrative experience. Ultimately, it's about getting the team to work together as perfectly as possible, collecting equipment and developing the characters further, for example by improving their combat skills.
Apparently the Mass Effect board game will be released directly via Asmodee in stores. There was no mention of crowdfunding in the announcement. The title is due to be released sometime in late 2024. Modiphius also did not provide any information on the price.
