Almost every fan of Magic – The Gathering knows the Commander format. It is currently the most popular playing style of the trading card game. The creator of the idea, Sheldon Menery, has died after a seven-year battle with cancer. His wife Gretchyn Melde broke the sad news on Friday.
Hardly any other game format has been able to establish itself as clearly and sustainably on the trading card market as Commander in Magic – The Gathering. The mix of creativity through constantly new topics and the special style of play around a single leader card with an attached tactics deck has many fans - and admittedly: also some critics. Nevertheless, creator Sheldon Menery's idea was a success and at the same time a milestone for the MtG franchise. Menery had essentially immortalized himself in the deck “You Did This To Yourself” around the Commander 'Ruhan von den Fomori'. Enemies were transformed into weapons.
“Our lives were better because we knew Sheldon”
Fans and employees at Wizards of the Coast are saddened. “Our lives were better because we knew Sheldon,” reads the official Magic the Gathering website. The reasons for this lie not only in Sheldon Menery's long career alone, but above all in his dealings with those who supported him.
“Sheldon always said his superhero power was choosing friends,” wrote Scott Larabeem, organized play manager for Magic: The Gathering. He met Menery in 1999 - and most recently spent the entire month of August with him. At that time, Menery was optimistic about his health situation.
Other companions of Sheldon Menery expressed similar emotion. His legacy is gigantic - human, as can be seen from the many condolences, and also for the trading card game Magic - The Gathering. MtG designer Gavin Verhey describes it like this: If you wanted to describe Menry's influence on the game and the individual people, you would need a book.
Big names from the scene have said goodbye to Sheldon Menery and they too emphasize his great influence. “Professor” Brian Lewis wrote on “X” (formerly Twitter) that Menery made the game and the community better.
