Wizards of the Coast remain on the road to success with Magic the Gathering. When presenting the current quarterly figures, HasbroCEO Chris Cocks stated that the Fallout Commander set is generating excellent sales.
The mix of two popular franchises is a good basis for success. If there is then a hype from outside, the sales can be catapulted to unimagined spheres. This apparently happened recently with the crossover between Magic the Gathering and Fallout, fueled by the release of the series of the same name for Bethesda's post-apocalyptic role-playing game.
Fallout: a "great set"
The announcement on Wednesday is certainly a surprise. After all, the Fallout franchise is well-known and popular among gaming fans, but outside the scene it is rather difficult to reach as a topic suitable for the masses, not least because of the crazy content. However, Fallout has obviously gained some new fans - or brought back former fans - in the wake of the successful launch of the Amazon series of the same name. The sales figures for the franchise games in the games segment already indicate the synergies: sales of the Fallout games increased by several hundred percent.
Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks said in a telephone conferencethat Magic the Gathering: Fallout set is a "great set." It is probably the best performing Commander set of all time. But because these types of sets are smaller than "premieres," this has to be weighted accordingly, Cocks told investors.
Wizards of the Coast is building on the success of previous crossovers: fans of Magic the Gathering have already been able to immerse themselves in the worlds of Warhammer 40.000, Doctor Who, Jurassic World or The Lord of the Rings. The latter in particular was a real sales driverIn less than half a year, Hasbro The set based on Tolkien's classic fantasy grossed more than 200 million US dollars.
License costs as a risk
The success of the sets does not come without economic risks. Hasbro has to pay the appropriate licensing fees in order to even be able to access the brands. The more popular a content is, the more expensive the licensing will ultimately be and the greater the risk of a possible failure if, contrary to all expectations, the sets are not accepted by fans.

However, with Fallout, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro have obviously done everything right. The success of the series probably contributed a lot to this. Two sets of The Lord of the Rings will Hasbro per year to support Magic the Gathering's sales.
The Commander sets ultimately generate significantly less revenue than the Premier sets, as the licensing fees still have to be deducted. Next up is Assassin's Creed - a decent sum is likely to flow to license holder Ubisoft. The same applies to the pairs of Marvel and Disney and Final Fantasy and Square Enix. According to Chris Cocks, even a success on the scale of The Lord of the Rings could be repeated. Cocks considers Marvel and Final Fantasy in particular to be suitable candidates that should be placed "in the same league".
