Magic the Gathering: Arena will appear as an app for smartphones and tablets this month. As Wizards of the Coast reports on the official website for the mobile game, the early access phase will start on January 28th, but with some technical restrictions: At the beginning, only a few Android smartphones that are based on a of three chipsets.

The Wizards of the Coast have been officially working on the mobile offshoot of Magic the Gathering: Arena since 2019, at least at the start of the year it was announced that a version for on the go was already being developed. In the same year, the desktop version was launched as a market-ready game - after a beta phase of around two years. A MAC version will also be released. Now the game finally makes the leap to mobile devices, it's no longer just a vague plan. The early access phase begins at the end of the month.

Magic the Gathering Arena is initially only available for Android devices

It was only in September of last year that Wizards of the Coast announced that they wanted to start playing on mobile devices before the end of 2020 and had the first gameplay one as part of a streaming show shown. Ultimately, as is well known, nothing came of the set schedule. But now it starts, at least for a relatively limited target group. Magic the Gathering: Arena is far from finished with the early start on January 28th.

The Magic the Gathering: Arena app will initially only be available for Android devices. The developers call devices with the Kirin 970, Snapdragon 845 and Exynos 9810 chipsets compatible. The compatibility list currently includes 29 mobile devices, including the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, Asus gaming smartphones ROG Phone II and 3, and the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G and Samsung Galaxy S9. Some devices from manufacturers such as Xiaomi, One, Oppo, Sony or LG can also be found on the published device list, which can be viewed on the game's website.

More information

In conclusion, the list is expressly not. As Wizards of the Coast announces, only the devices with known compatibility have been released. Due to the different technical equipment, it is not possible to list all devices. In the end, players can orientate themselves on the supported chipsets and other requirements and simply try out the app for Magic the Gathering: Arena in cases of doubt.

Otherwise:

  • Android version: 6.0 (marshmallow)
  • RAM: 4GB
  • GraphicsAPI: OpenGL ES 3.0
  • Texture Compression: ETC2

Apple fans are still looking into the tube, but iOS devices including iPhone and iPad will be supported later in 2021. This depends, among other things, on the quality of the game version. The developer bodies are clear: "We want to make sure that our releases are polished and ready to play."

By the way, the launch date on January 28th is no coincidence. The release coincides with that of the new MTG set Kaldheim - Viking theme! - together. This will also be available for Magic the Gathering: Arena from January 8th and will also be released as a physical set on February 5th. Two new mechanics will be introduced: predestination and bragging rights. There are also modal double-sided cards. The setting is typical for a Viking theme, so players also end up in snow-covered areas.
