There have been many rumors about a 2D Zelda, but it has been clear since the last Nintendo Direct Show: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening will be released exclusively for Nintendo Switch this year. The title is not a new part of the legendary action-adventure series, but a remake of the Gameboy classic from 1993. Is it bad news for fans? Not at all, because Link's Awakening is without a doubt one of the best Zelda video games of all time. On the other hand, those who were hoping for a completely new adventure may be disappointed.

Classic, but more beautiful

Anyone who watched the game scenes from the Gameboy version as a viewer of the last Direct Show should have initially been amazed - perhaps even confused - by the brightly colored 3D graphics, which did not seem to match what real fans did know from the nineties. Nevertheless: The step to reissue excellent classics is an ongoing trend in the games industry, which even Nintendo cannot escape. On the contrary: The Japanese would do well to jump on the bandwagon, because not everyone who likes Zelda automatically knows the old - and mostly excellent - opening titles.

Everyone should be happy that The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening now appears in an appealing 3D look for the hybrid console Nintendo Switch: Hardcore fans, lovers of shallow action adventures, but above all those who are not yet familiar with the original titles Came into contact. The inhibition threshold to grab an old Gameboy in order to play time-honored video games with pixel graphics is high - despite numerous modern pixel games. Now everyone can play - and the whole thing in 3D too.

Graphically, the remake is reminiscent of the handheld title The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds* for Nintendo 3DS, so the developers stick to at least one basic graphic concept.

The story of magical musical instruments, legendary weapons, evil forces and colorful fantasy creatures is timeless. One more reason to mark the year 2019 in red in the calendar, because Nintendo has not yet narrowed the release date.
