The building block giant Lego and the games giant Asmodee are entering into a multi-year partnership to bring Lego board games to market. The new publisher "Dotted Games" will act as the control center.
The announcement of a mere collaboration between Lego and Asmodee is not really surprising: the two companies had already presented their first joint project, "Monkey Palace", at the Nuremberg Toy Fair in January. Now it is clear that it will not stop there. More board games are to follow, and apparently the company wants to serve several target groups at once. The latter is vaguely stated in a new statement on the cooperation project: The LEGO Group and Asmodee have announced a multi-year partnership. They want to join forces to "develop and distribute new joint gaming experiences."
The plan is to create several Lego board games “for all types of players, offering families and brick fans around the world new ways to play in the Lego universe”.
Dotted Games: Money Palace as a debut work
In this specific case, bundling means the establishment of a publishing house specifically responsible for the project: Dotted Games. The board games will be created there, in which the famous Lego bricks will probably always be the central idea. An "experienced team" will work at Dotted Games, the companies say. Dotted Games will be based in Denmark. The team has "decades of invaluable experience in the board game industry" and can look back on a "remarkable collection of awards". It is not yet clear who exactly is part of the team.
The example of Monkey Palace at least shows what the cooperation is all about at the start: offering families a new experience with a crossover of building blocks and board games. The first work was created by authors Tam Myaing (Lair, Reap!) and David Gordon (Push Push Penguin, Making Monsters). Both have already worked together several times, including on the spring new release “Floristry” by Up Games. Monkey Palace (2 to 4 players, ages ten and up) will be released in Germany in autumn 2024 and will cost around 35 euros. The basic idea: rebuild a monkey palace on Lego bricks and collect banana points, with a card mechanism acting as a well-known board game element. The Lego board game will have its world premiere at the GAME in Essen celebrate; sales will then begin in stores.
It is also known that Dotted Games is already working on a party game: Brick Like This!. This title is also primarily aimed at families and combines "teamwork, communication and building with LEGO bricks". The game is for two to eight players aged seven and over and should have simple rules.
Both Lego and Asmodee is delighted about the sealed partnership: "By combining Asmodee's extensive expertise in the field of board games with the limitless potential of the Lego system, we are opening up exponential opportunities for innovation in the game," says Jaume Fabregat, Board Games Lead at Lego Publishing. The partnership paves the way for future collaborations that will "redefine the Lego building experience in the tabletop landscape and offer fans unique and distinctive gaming experiences."
The announcement of the new cooperation is the first major industry announcement from Asmodee since the Embracer Group split into three independent companies: triple-A video game studios, indie and mobile game studios, and Asmodee. As part of this change, Asmodee Debts of 900 million US dollars were taken over. The decision was criticized by industry insiders: They see the main risks in the event that Asmodee cannot repay the loan. The loan is due in February 2025. The establishment of the new studio with a focus on licensing of the globally popular Lego brand seems like a solid foundation for the repayment venture. The previous success of Star Wars Unlimited – here too, significant sales growth could be recorded, which would support Asmodee’s balance sheet.
